US US Coast Guard to tackle China 'illegal' fishing in Pacific

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.

The United States said Friday it will deploy Coast Guard patrol ships in the western Pacific to counter "destabilizing and malign" activities by China in disputed fishing grounds of the South China Sea.

Accusing China of "illegal" and "unregulated" fishing, as well as "harassment" of fishing boats from regional countries, White House National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien said in a statement that the US Coast Guard "is strategically homeporting significantly enhanced Fast Response Cutters...in the western Pacific."

These Sentinel class vessels will carry out maritime security operations, including helping fishing boats "in collaboration with regional partners who have limited offshore surveillance and enforcement capacity, and ensure freedom of navigation," he said.

Washington regularly accuses China of breaking international law by sending its warships as escorts for Chinese fishing vessels into the fishing grounds of other countries.

In July, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper slammed a "catalog of bad behavior" in the South China Sea over the previous months and accused the Chinese military of having sunk a Vietnamese fishing boat, harassing Malaysian oil and gas development and escorting Chinese fishing fleets into Indonesia's exclusive economic zone.

O'Brien added that the Coast Guard, which is under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was also studying whether to permanently station several of its patrol ships in the area of American Samoa in the South Pacific.

Last month, Indonesia protested about an incursion by Chinese coastguard ships in its exclusive economic zone, which is situated between its own territorial waters and international waters and where the state claims exclusive rights to exploit natural resources.

China claims almost the whole of the South China Sea as its own, a claim contested by several countries including Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

This is a bigger deal than what it sounds like. China has been aggressively encroaching on everyone else's fishing territories for a while now. The infamous Chinese "Maritime Militia" being one of the key antagonists in this issue. The problem of course isn't limited strictly to contentions over territorial sovereignty, but to the devastating overfishing that the Chinese practice as well. There are many other subjects of dispute, but one should not overlook fishing rights.

Nixon and Uncle Sam (gloves off) made the NVA repeatedly squeal like Ned Beatty when he was POTUS. It took the Communist congressional democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by screwing over South Vietnam.
Oh, the North Vietnamese had done a pretty good job of landing some nasty hits during the earlier guerilla stages of the war, and it wasn't until after the North had the Viet Cong suicide into our guns during the Tet Offensive (which was done in blatant violation of an agreed-upon ceasefire for the very, very sacred Vietnamese New Year) because they were tired of all the bad publicity they were getting the cause that things reversed. Unfortunately media shills reported it as an astounding success for the commies instead of a failed offensive that lead to the loss of all previously effective irregular warfare capabilities, because "America loses to superior Communist future" was the narrative then, same as it is now. You are right about what came after, but the media kept uttering their same bullshit lies even when the NVA got quite literally bombed to the peace table after we wrecked their supply chains.

Let me phrase what I meant better: they did to China what they did to us and just like the USA, they may have taken losses but they made sure their enemy did not enjoy being in Vietnam.
China needed at least 200,000 soldiers to take 1 city then decided to claim victory soon after and turn back. This was after the USA ravaged Vietnam though part of this can be laid on the PLA being terrible.

0n top of that those countries don't have the naval power to make China fuck off and if they tried they run the risk of getting steamrolled into Chinese colonies.
It doesn't help that many barely spend anything on their navies and are neglected. The Philippine flagship is an old USCG Hamilton-class cutter we gave to them for free. It replaced a WWII-era DE in 2016.

When the PLA went into Vietnam they caught a bad case of assbeatititus and the only cure was to pretend they won while retreating back home with zero goals of the war accomplished. This all went down while they were still picking up the pieces from the war with us so they were at a big disadvantage on one hand, but on the other their forces actually had relevant combat experience.

Vietnam was lost by the incompetent and dysfunctional South Vietnamese government. We could’ve killed all the commies but they were still doomed to collapse soon after we left.

Same problem in Iraq and Afghanistan today.

China basically has killed its own country with pollution and is unable to make food. If China didn't have nukes, Asia would have long since pushed their shit in.
For those that aren't in the know and sadly it has has some nasty repercussions, part of the old plan for America to dominate the globe was to let 3rd world nations become polluted hellholes that would trade us their non renewable resources for renewable ones. They destroy their land and ecosystems while we retain a much more healthy land. The entire Americas (North and South) have more oil and rare mineral resources than practically any other nation but we shutter oil fields and mines all the time. This is the main reason. Let others destroy themselves so they become inextricably beholden to the breadbasket of the world. They won't nuke their own food source and in the meanwhile we build up huge army powers to prevent invasions.

If you haven't figured this out by now you don't pay attention to the reason why we'd even take foreign oils or materials when we can make it here ourselves.

It got bad enough on the NW Coast of the US and Canada that fisherman started hiring mercs to be part of the boat crews because the Coast Guard and US Navy wouldn't do shit until, amusingly enough, Chinese vessels started suffering "Storm damage" and "lost with all hands" and "Mystery Boat of Dead Slants" and China started whining about piracy.
When was this? I never learned about this before. (thanks in advance)
