The fact that he left a severely injured, bleeding, unconscious woman in a car he wrecked, then absconded with her identification, then spoke about it without an iota of remorse coupled with the bruises on Jen's arms and face is at least suggestive of an abuser. I don't recall her ever being bruised up like this prior to his arrival, but I'm not a Jen expert.

Gene is an opportunist. He's harmed everyone who's ever had the misfortune to come into his orbit. Family, friends, past partners. It absolutely benefits him to make her as dependent on him as possible, and as difficult to be rid of him as possible. Someone like Jen also saves him the time and effort of needing to isolate her from friends since she has none.

The question of what is there even to get angry about implies that perhaps she provokes him. Perhaps so. That gives him zero right to lay hands on her, and if he has done so, she's a victim of violence and he's a perpetrator.

Jen attracts people she can dominate and boss around, people who have something she can hold over her head. Her mother it was guilt, Gene it's housing and who knows what else.. He’ll feed the cats, clean the litter box and take the garbage out. Laundry is in the basement? He’s there to carry it up. Their apartment door is decorated for Halloween with tinsel that is way above Jen’s reach.

All these things that we wouldn’t think twice about but are difficult for Jen alone. She’s never had this much freedom! Her life has gotten exponentially easier since having Gene around. And I don’t even want to think about hair washing/cutting, powdering that goes on...

I would have to agree. Sure, Jen technically has more freedom with Gene here to help her out, but she doesn't actually take advantage of that except to be lazier. But no, her fundamental life has remained mostly unchanged. She stays inside all day, doesn't walk, gets groceries delivered, eats tons of take out, and cooks shit food. That's it, that's her life.
