It would definitely be bad. I can still see a concerted effort (even without legal maneuvering) to just convince Biden electors to vote for Harris if Biden wins. If Trump wins of course, none of this matters. If faithless electors can just happen in individual cases (and have happened) there's nothing stopping the DNC from publicly asking Electors to do what I suggested. Yeah, they can't be forced, but Biden electors are Dem Party loyalists. If Biden drops dead or drops out, I think most of them would just do what the DNC suggests, and she would be inaugurated in such a case. The REAL election is the EC.

Obviously we can assume that cnn and MSNBC could be in a democrat's pocket, but why isn't the Macon county journal (or whatever) publishing stories on this? Surely there are plenty of republican local rags and it would be impossible to stop all of them.

Multiple possible reasons. They don't have direct access. They don't know how true it is vs how much of a political hit job it is. It's more of a national story than a local one unless you live wherever Hunter Biden lives. Potential libel liability if you publish this without 100% solid confirmable proof. Most people that go into journalism are lefties. It's not a job that pays well and is really a way for activism now. No direct incentive to do so.

Ultimately this story is way above every local papers paygrade. And this is assuming the paper isn't in the bag for dems and Biden which is a pretty big ask.

The story is really, really complicated for not _that_ much payoff yet (for media purposes). Look at how many times in this thread somebody asks for the short version and never gets it.
And even if you distill it down, if you didn't think Joe Biden was crooked af from "lol I got him fired" then this won't change much.
If you want to do something "here's why Joe Biden sucks" there's a lot of stuff that's a lot easier to work with.
