In fairness, child labor laws exist because of the industrial revolution. It's all well and good to have your kid handle the farm or the store, but the factories that to this day still frequently kill and maim adult workers were like feeding children to a wood chipper. It was cruel and unusual to send kids in to the shoddy and unsafe factories of the time because it was cruel and unusual to send adults in there, but someone had to do it. The laws have just stuck around now that most jobs aren't so dangerous because the lack of those jobs have conditioned young kids to just be unfit for any jobs. (+ increased public school hours interfere with any jobs being held)
