The idea that kids are some kind of mindless robots that will love their mothers no matter what does seem to be sadly common though, as well as having kids to try and save a failing relationship. I even see prolifers trotting out the first one especially (which is hilarious because tons of kids born to fundies end up estranged from their parents due to them being abusive assholes).

What gets me is in my experience it's grown ass adults who think babies are mindless love robots or cute dress up dolls a lot of the time. At least when it's an underage girl you can chalk that attitude up to immaturity and the fact that their brains are still developing.

Isn't that really fucking ironic? The brainless potatoes like hooligans, have personalities, like rap music, can talk, etc but the actual kids with brains are just little dolls and are ignored for the most part, the ones that aren't even aware of anything but pain get all the attention.... what the fuck are these fundies doing? Maybe they also have no brains. Like mother, like daughter, ya know?

Noted photographer Heji Shin did a series of photos of babies crowning during birth. She blew them up into huge photographs for an exhibit. She wanted to capture the brutality and truth of birth, how it really looks. In order to get women to agree to her capturing the crowning she agreed to also do the standard “pretty birth diaper commercial” photos for them.

Women, for the most part reacted very negatively to the crowning photos that captured the unvarnished reality of birth, it was men who were impressed by them. Men liked the photos. They appreciated the painful, bloody, difficult, gory side of birth being shown - many said they felt they could relate to these photos as they captured the painful and brutal reality of what it takes to create something or someone new. They could respect this version of birth because it’s the truth.

The soft focus diaper commercial stuff rings hollow because it is false and inaccurate.
It actually makes a lot of sense to me that mothers who experience the agony of childbirth want to remember a more sanitized version of it, while men who can never experience it are interested in the brutal reality.
n. Subject closed.

However, after the DS kid she shut down the womb factory and imported two kids from Haiti instead. She obviously didn’t want to roll the dice and risk being blessed with another DS baby.

While she likes to pose with photos of her large brood she’s like the old English upper-crust mothers who produced lots of children but left the raising and rearing of them to the paid help. Any lawyer that ends up on the federal bench (and eventually Supreme Court) has to spend the majority of their time working, networking, politicking and ass kissing. Being pregnant would have been the most time she ever spent in regular proximity to each of her children.

Given what she preaches l’d love to hear how she rationalizes putting her legal career above the sacred duty of being a full time mother to half a dozen kids, one with special needs and two that were orphans in a new country. I’m sure the words “agonized” and “prayed” are used a lot. If god wanted Amy to stay home and change diapers he wouldn’t have created so many poor immigrant women that are so darn good at changing diapers and burping babies!
Every successful man with multiple children has put the burden of raising them on other people. ACB's mentor Scalia had 9 kids who he says were raised by his wife 'with very little help from him.' I don't see why it becomes a bad thing because a woman is doing it.
Come to think of it, I don’t know much about the Ultra-Orthodox attitude towards disabled children. I do know most rabbis will absolutely recommend abortion if the life of the mother is at stake, or when the fetus is incompatible with life, but once the poor sod is already born...? They don’t talk about it much. Unlike Christian fundies they don’t like parading horribly disfigured children.
Interestingly, it used to be considered really shameful to have a disabled kid in the Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox worlds. Kids would be regularly sent away to residential facilities, even if they didn't need that. Something changed in the 80s and they began starting orthodox schools, camps, and other facilities for those kids, and it doesn't have nearly the stigma it once did. The fundraiser for the Hebrew Academy for Special Children (HASC) is one of the biggest annual fundraising events in the NYC area Orthodox community.
The Catholic Church owns a lot of stuff in some areas, like hospitals for instance and refusing to cover it on insurance is just as bad as banning it. It may be different legally but the end result of less access to contraception is the same. Then there are businesses which just happen to be owned by a Christian like Hobby Lobby. Were they Catholic? Where does it end? There's precedent for a lot more denial of coverage especially if anyone can do it bc muh religious beliefs. That story of the woman who died in a motorcycle crash and was kept alive for 10 yrs is disturbing. She was dead as far as I'm concerned when her head hit the pavement. What is the smell her husband was speaking of in the old vent farm?
I feel like you're showing your hand by asking if the fundamentalist Christians from Oklahoma are Catholic.

It’s not that a woman is doing it, it’s a woman who also claims to be a staunch catholic who believes the traditional role of mothers is in the home raising her many children and opposes birth control and abortion. A “okay for me, but not for thee” if you will. Not believing in birth control and abortion is an option if you are incredibly wealthy, can can afford to hire staff to care for your large brood and clean your giant home, but that’s not the reality for many women.

If you want to pay people to raise your children that’s your choice. Most people rich people have done it for centuries. Many children from wealthy homes are closer to their nannies than their mothers. However, if you chose to do that don’t also preach that motherhood is the most sacred duty of a woman if you are paying others to do that sacred duty in order for you to focus on your career. My issue is hypocrisy, not her choosing to have a demanding career and a large family.

(Little known fact that La Leche League was actually founded by the Catholic Church. They realized that infant formula was allowing mothers from all classes, in large numbers, to be away from home and/or work. The thinking was breastfeeding helped promote traditional full time mothers. In the past only the rich could afford wet nurses to have that kind of freedom when having raising babies.)

They lost almost all federal funding after the Mental Health Systems Act was repealed 1981.

Here's an update on that story. TL : DR - in 2018, he asked that treatment be stopped, and he brought her home to die, which she did a few days later.

This is why it's a good idea to make it clear to medics while of sound mind that you want no life support if you're vegetative. Fuck that. (I mean yeah it's up for debate whether there's any "you" left to suffer, but like... imagine, a part of you that persists, locked away in a corner of your brain, forever. Like locked in syndrome but somehow worse or at least just as bad.) I reiterate, fuck that.

Exactly, and particularly that "of sound mind" bit. My dad had told me once when I was younger that if he was in pain and dying, he wouldn't want to be on life support. But then when he was dying of terminal cancer and in excruciating pain, he broke down and outright refused to be a "Do Not Resuscitate" patient, and there really wasn't anything we could say about it because he was still "coherent" enough to be aware of his situation and surroundings. Thankfully he passed in his sleep and didn't come back from it, but what a horrible thing to have to put your body, mind, and family through.

Came across another anencephaly baby FB page. Seems to be pretty bog standards, pics and videos of a brainless baby, bible verses, making living children hold it after it died. Looks like it just died a few weeks ago too.

If they want to take pictures like that and maybe share them by e-mail, that's one thing, but social media is very much another.

Lady, are you saying that if I become pregnant with a tater you will adopt it? Do you think that there are legions of prospective parents desperate to adopt brainless flesh blobs that just happen to carry the scientific taxonomy of "baby"?

There are people who will adopt disabled children. But what is the point of setting that up for a brain-free potato? Doctors have to put the option for abortion on the table. Parents have to be offered all possible options. Otherwise it's malpractice time. Abortion is for the best in these cases. You have more time freed up to try again for a healthy baby. You are putting your body through the stress of an abnormal pregnancy for nothing.

This lady relates the story of her friend's rape related pregnancy. If her own daughter was a rape victim would she pressure her into keeping the baby? If she herself was raped would she? God's little miracles come with price tags too. Not everyone can afford a special needs child and many parents struggle to find support. This woman lives in fundie fantasy land.

Yep....seeing the horror of machines keeping you alive, I have advance directives on file. I am NOT dying on machines if I can possibly help it. Awful way to go...

It would be interesting if someone took her up on her offer and dumped their unwanted kid on her. Especially one that's not a dying, brainless lump of meat. From what I can tell her only mothering experience was the brainless zombaby that lived less than two hours. I think caring for an actual child, even a disabled one, and all the ongoing expenses of it would wear her out pretty quickly.

She seems to be some kind of fundie singer/songwriter and mentions going on tour as well as having chronic illnesses. A brainless spud that only lived 77 minutes was probably the ideal child for her since it wasn't a longterm commitment and can get her asspats and attention years later.

"I'm not judging anyone, except for those awful coward women who delete fetuses that aren't compatible with life! Also women who get pregnant from rape, those whores. Love, a godwarrior Mama Bear!!"

Edited to avoid double posting: a Vanity Fair article about Daniel Miller, who is apparently a high-functioning "happy Downie" and is much loved by his unofficial surrogate family.

This reminds me of that book by Dalton Trumbo, 'Johnny Got His Gun'. Being trapped inside your PTSD-ridden mind with no ability to communicate. Obviously a very melodramatic rendition of being comatose/in a persistent vegetative state, but terrifying nonetheless.

This woman claims she was the product of her mentally handicapped mother being raped by her stepfather, and then forced to carry out the pregnancy by her mother. Wild how she thinks this is a wholesome story about how abortion is evil instead of a horrific look into how fundies treat women and rape. Seriously, wtf.

> "Broken, excruciatingly painful, yet beautifully perfect"

Jesus. Imagine being this proud that instead of letting your doomed offspring pass quietly in the womb you instead knowingly let it spend its last few hours in terrible pain, and somehow thinking that makes you a better person.

Also that second woman reminds me of another story I came across that was similar - the big differences being that their mother was raped by her uncle as a teen, and being denied from the abortion was an effort by the entire family to cover it up. But one of the things the writer talked about was that she came to hate the "but if it weren’t for pro-lifers YOU wouldn’t be here!!!" shit because she caught on that when they told her that they didnt care about her well being - after all, if they did they would‘ve put more effort into stopping her pedophile great uncle-father - but a weasel tactic to try and get her concede that no, her mother being raped was actually a net-good and rape isn’t all that bad, so no need to jail the rapist... Kinda like what this woman’s saying actually. Funny how she says her mentally retarded mother chose not to abort (after being "advised" by her mother, who sounds like what she really chose was not being subject of a pedo-scandal over her own disabled daughter’s safety) but it was just SO HARD on her rapist father.

Another thing that stuck with me about the story I mentioned was that it ended with her saying something like "I won’t dwell on the hypotheticals of my own birth or potential not-birth because I find such what-ifs to be pedantic and from a place of ill faith, but I will say I would sleep a helluva lot better at night knowing that the decision had been entirely my mother’s and not one made for her by a bunch of predatory old men." That seems fitting here as well.
