I unironically have met some of my good friends through groups from /pol/, but otherwise I've stopped going on there because of shit-tier threads. I don't care for post-2010 anime so even those boards aren't for me anymore

In general 4chan is way past it's prime. The last decade has not been kind to the smaller communities online. Discord pretty much gutted a lot of small subcommunities and removed them from accesibility thus making them more and more inbred. I saw many small forums and general threads just die out because people moved to Discord. I simply can't produce the same culture as an old school General/serial thread can provide. (A general is a thread that pops up over and over again talking about the same subject, over time it gets it's own small community and culture.)
Not to mention Internet culture in general got more mainstread, see the hordes of places that only exist to explain injokes for outsiders. Umm, it's like missing the point big time because in-jokes and references were good to build a more cohesive e-culture. You know the lingo, you feel like making progress etc. Now everything is a maymay and everything is spammed for a few days before the whole thing just dies.
So basically the place is a relic of the past with no real sucessor.

It's just a place for niche hobby discussion without the gay community drama that comes with discords and shit and where you can also say nigger. I'm glad any dumb ideas about it being a meme machine or massive cultural/political force are being dispelled so people who don't use it can wax poetic about the "glory days" and leave it alone. It's just a nerd community for talking about electronics or sports or whatever but you can anonymously call people who disagree with you nigger.

Even the ridiculous to navigate board is kinda part of the charm. It worked a lot better in its day—now similar sites are so easy to use that it’s just too annoying to get on 4chan unless you’re used to it already.
But anyway it has its legacy and that should be...I don’t think respected is a good word but preserved, definitely preserved.
