We should be able to see that if the RNC significantly changes any of its rules. From my understanding, the RNC is not as strict as the DNC, which has allowed non-conventional candidates in the past even before Trump like Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan. The DNC was already strict as it was with its superdelegates, and became even more authoritative after 2016 to hamper the rise of even more progressives like Sanders or Warren.
