Yup, something of this nature did indeed go down in the 2000 Election. Basically, it all eventually boiled down to that one dispute after many recounts (many recounts that went in Bush's favor, no less). The Democrats were making a case to do yet another recount ... But this time with the "undervotes"/ballots where people accidentally selected two candidates in a single category because of the whole "butterfly ballot" debacle. The FL Supreme Court sided with the Democrats, and Bush took it to the SCOTUS. We all know what happened from there.

Lefties claim that Bush "stole" the election because of him contesting the undervotes being counted. "Muh voter suppression!"
