How did motherfuckers dare doing this shit without talking with Nintendo first? How the hell did you expect this to work? First the rampant pedophilia and now this shit, you keep giving them reason to not support your pro scene.

Damn it, I was JUST about to post that bit of news.

That said, it’s basically due to them being retards and running their Melee tournament with a fan-made program called Slippi that would’ve allowed competitors to compete online.

The big issue with that? It needs a Melee ROM and a computer or, if you‘re playing on a Wii, homebrew firmware.
Slippi netplay doesnt work on Wii, I think theres some slippi wizardry where you can use it on Wii to stream the game from console to PC/Dolphin though. And if you have a Wii getting a legal rom of Melee is piss easy. Could also have had people take selfies with the game to "vet" people who are using "illegal" roms. But even with all that said, I will admit most people probably aren't going through that process, and all the big e-celebs trying to fight this acting like noone pirates this shit are acting crazy.
But come on, not only is Nintendo no longer making money off Melee but fuck, they even shut down the Ultimate event that was apart of TBH10. That runs on the Nintendo Switch.

Because Nintendo is against fan projects, roms, and emulators (even though emulators are legal). Slippi and roms are really the only to play melee online which is far better than Ultimate's shitty online.

Nintendo is against literally any kind of "fanmade competition" of their games because it might or might not lead to piracy regardless if it makes sense. They always were.

I wont pretend nintendo isnt being a unfair here but who thought this was a good idea at all? You guys remember project M? It didnt steal the IP, it wasnt a rom or an emulator, it was just a harmless mod and Nintendo simply killed it forever anyway.

Now people are doing this tournament that might have legit pirates playing under a third party online program and people are shocked nintendo doesnt want to support this? They all had it coming tbh.

For the second paragraph, that is a common misconception. Nintendo in no way shape or form ever even touched Project M. The mod shut down because of the FEAR of a cease and deist, a choice by the creators.

Even then a good chunk of top players not already have slippi, but even own the original gamecube disk. And how can the people at Big House even be responsible to make sure you don´t steal a rom for a 2 decade old game?

Nintendo is legit the worst company when it comes to this stuff. Now we have to wait and see if they will also cancel others online tournaments using Slippi. As far as I know The Big House is a fringe case cause its sponsored or in collaboration with Nintendo.

Imagine wanting to do something nice for the community and then Uncle Nintendo shits in the punchbowl

Why is everyone pretending there is no piracy here? They literally made an emulator JUST for melee and all you need is the iso / rom. The same rom that Nintendo tried to bury from existence long ago and doesnt want anyone to acess.

"But if you rip the iso from the disk it's technically legal" yeah but come on, lets not pretend 100% of the players were not going to download and share the rom online anyway.

This is like, literally hosting an online CS GO tournament on free pirate servers where you dont need an original copy of the game to play and being upset Valve doesnt support you.

The funny part is that Nintendo didnt need to C&D the Ultimate online tournament but they did anyway just to spite the community lol.

Nintendo better watch out, they already got a plan to smash them

To be fair, the issue was the usage of modded emulation, so it isn't illegal unless it's proven that the participants had pirate copies. Given that Nintendo is usually paranoid, a C&D is expected from them. It's pretty shitty for them to do so especially they have a long track record of bad business practices.

Even so, the outrage is just autistic beyond belief and it's extremely reactionary:

As if those guys actually went on and ripped their own copies of Melee. Chances are they don't even have optical drives to do so.

Melee is old as fuck. The only people that play the game, at this point, are a very niche group. The only people benefiting from a rerelease of it would be the smash boomers imo.

How the hell is it NOT piracy? The game not being easily acessible doesnt change the fact that it's still piracy. Even if the game was cheap and acessible, the emulator would be the absolute best version to play because of the rollback online, in that case nintendo would be even more justified. Besides, nintendo wont bring melee back because they want to sell ultimate, no point in having competition with itself.

Besides, there is a HUGE difference between "I'm going to pirate this game because i want to have fun" and "i'm going to pirate this game because i want to play public pirate tournaments with money involved". If Nintendo says nothing then they're condoning this behavior and then slippery slope happens, people start using that to justify piracy of all games.

Nintendo didnt "kill" melee. You want to play for fun? There is nothing to stop you from pirating the game like you could before, nintendo cant shutdown your internet connection. The only people with any "right" to be upset are the same 8 pro players who make a living winning tournaments, this doesnt affect anyone else.

>someone says "b-but covid means we cant have local tournaments, how will the community survive without tournaments?!"

Shouldnt you worry about the pandemic first? All competitive gaming and sports communities are having to deal with covid too, smashers should stop being so entitled.

Maybe relying on a single game so much that not being able to go to local tourneys would "destroy your life" as they say isn't the best idea, really hard for them to grasp that but they might as well wavedash to the nearest mcdonald's till this shit is over

The thing about Melee that interests me is how their community is so demented, compared to the Age of Empires 2 community, which is also an old game (originally released in 1999), but their community is sane for the most part. Not to mention how Microsoft continued to update the game by releasing a Definitive Edition of the game last year.
