That whole mindset is basically like the nerd version of
keeping up with the Joneses, except you have to in order to "stay in the conversation" with other people online. Nerd groups have weird hierarchies where you're judged as a person not by your character, but by your collection, your video game accomplishments, superficial shit like that. Fall behind on your eternally growing collection of bullshit trinkets or video game scores, and your position on the totem pole drops.
That's how you end up with crazy situations like the Smash Bros. community and the guys who ran EVO grooming young girls and being pedos and so many others just staying silent. Nobody rocks the boat because they know they'll get ostracized, and the kind of people who are attracted to the idea of taking video games seriously to any extend don't tend to have the balls to call out shit when they see it.
