Pornhub will prohibit uploads from unverified users, effective immediately, the company announced Tuesday.

The new policy is part of a slate of “trust and safety” measures that come after the site faced an onslaught of criticism in recent days over allegations of hosting abusive and illegal content.

“Our core values such as inclusivity, freedom of expression and privacy are only possible when our platform is trusted by our users," the company said in a statement announcing the changes. "Every online platform has the moral responsibility to join this fight, and it requires collective action and constant vigilance.”

The site will limit uploads to content partners and people in the Model Program, effective immediately. The company said it will create a new verification process next year to allow any user who goes through an identification process to upload content.

Pornhub will also ban downloads from the site, with the exception of paid content from the Model Program, whose users are verified. It will also expand moderation with a new team dedicated to auditing the site. It will release a report on moderation results next year, including details about child sexual abuse materials found on the platform.

The changes come after a scathing op-ed in the New York Times that detailed allegations of child abuse and sexual assault videos on the site.

MindGeek, Pornhub’s parent company, is based in Canada. The op-ed prompted concern from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with investigationsfrom Visa and Mastercard.

Pornhub and other streaming sites have faced criticism for years from both the public and members of the porn industryover policies that allow anyone to upload content with little oversight.

The renewed scrutiny comes amid a public debate over how and when tech platforms like Facebook should be held accountable for user-generated content on their sites.

At the same time, the criticism has been fueled by a growing moral panic over sex trafficking. A petition to shut down the site led by Laila Mickelwait, an anti–sex work activist, received nearly 2 million signatures this summer.

Major questions remain over the implementation and efficacy of Pornhub’s measures. The requirements to become a verified user are minimal, and reporting from Vice last year showed that “fingerprinting” software that the company uses to prevent content from being reposted once it has been removed can be easily circumvented.

Pornhub did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Unrelated, but since when did the NYTimes start translating their articles into Chinese? I'm almost certain this decision was a long time coming and that's because porn production companies are probably pissy random people are uploading their videos. Probably why they removed the download button as well.

Also, fuck the original author for going after Pornhub by trying to get them banned from using credit card services.

A bit off topic, but every time I see this comment tacked on the end of an article I'm reminded of a video I saw some years back. I don't remember who it was, but they were explaining that some jouno's "request for comment" from him was literally a just a Twitter PM that he received a couple hours before the article went live.

As a website largely driven by user-generated content, I predict this will go poorly for Pornhub. I would call the concern trolls the new Puritans, but the Puritans were a respectable bunch who had an actual work ethic and took actual risks for what they believed (or they're an experimental music group, for you Britbongs.)

Well, it's a good thing everyone can look forward to trustworthy and safe porn. :smug:

This is absolutely going to kill Pornhub lol. People might have come to grips with using their card info to pay for shit like porn and that being an understood risk, but say the worst happens and pornhub gets hacked and your payment info gets stolen, most of the time the bank/financial institution will take care of it.

Asking random people to agree to send their personal identity information etc and have it connected on a server somewhere to the videos they've uploaded of them fucking other people? That's probably not going to be as easy a pill to swallow. We've seen time and time again that nothing on the internet is truly "secure" and unhackable and if a firm like Experian who literally makes its money handling financial info can get hacked and leak the info to 24 million people, I doubt Pornhub is going to do that much better. And the only logical way they're going to collect "authorization" in a broad manner is requiring some form of state issued ID to be scanned and sent in. So what happens when amateur pornstars on PH have their own fappening level event, except instead of it just being their nudes getting stolen, their address, full name, and other info will be there for sale most likely.

I think the majority of these changes are going to do to pornhub what happened to tumblr after they banned NSFW posts i.e. make the majority of people who use the site jump ship to another site,Just a few points come to mind

1: Pornhub is ubiquitous because its free and easy to use and most of the stuff on pornhub(The popular stuff anyway),Is clips of paid content being uploaded illegally under anonymous accounts,Make it verified accounts only and poof goes those videos and the people who came to the site for them too.
2: Their verification system is definitely going to be hot garbage, no porn site cares about security and pornhub is no exception ,Making all accounts verified will make pornhub an even bigger target for data breaches now that there will be useful information to go after.
3: Disabling downloads for all content except paid ones will piss off pretty much everyone who downloads vids,Because I highly doubt many people are going to bother paying to download a single clip when it will be posted somewhere else eventually and for free on top of it.
4: Theres no real reason to stick with pornhub, its the most popular pornsite but content wise its a dime a dozen,Many people will just go to other pornsites which don't have these restrictions to get what content they want, especially since these other sites 9/10 times won't need an account for the majority of its functions

I think pornhub is implementing all of these changes because they saw the explosion in popularity of onlyfans and many people who would want to go to pornhub in the past and pay for content just go to onlyfans now. Also I imagine lots of the "talent" are moving to be onlyfans only for convenience(and lots more possible money) and pornhub is just making these changes to force together a "community" to stick around the site and stem the bleed because outside of ads the cut they get from paid stuff from creators is their revenue stream.

I believe my autistic theory more than pornhubs own words because lets be real,Pornhub doesn't give two shits about abusive or illegal content,Only because they got caught and named and shamed.

Pornhub is probably too big to fail

I highly doubt any XXX Tube site is ever going to be to big to fail unless they incorporate a monetary system for models that's so useful it couldn't be replaced by a dozen other third party systems.

The business model they make most of their money from is just too simple that other sites can't quickly fill the void.

Just use an extension to download your porn directly in the highest quality. Who pays for a download button? It’s like paying for a pussy shot on onlyfans when some simp will post it for free.

whats a good extension?

But yeah porn tube sites are just too easy to copy.

But I still have my old mans dirty mags, my other half didnt like having all the pervert mags around so I told her I threw them away,,, I just hid them out in the woods.

Pretty much this.
The only reason everyone uses pornhub is because... everyone uses pornhub. Get people to stop using pornhub and, shockingly, people will stop using pornhub.
Popularity snowballs like that only really become unstoppable when you leverage that popularity to integrate it into users' daily life at the expense of the competition like Google has managed to do with YouTube. But you can't really do that with a porn site.

What if mind geek used porn to trojan into youtubes market?

Is it really? Are people really lining up around the block to see "BBW fetish model" xXxMissKitty666xXx jamb a hairbrush into her cooter on an unmade bed in a dark room and not y'know, the actual studios (that they either own or have rights agreements with) doing professional-quality work.

They noticed a trend. Onlyfans it taking over the camwhore market and considering what a liability that whole thing is, they let them have it.

You ever notice how streaming sites that host porn host only porn and places that host not-porn tend not to host porn? Maybe there's a good reason for that, perhaps something to do with user accounts and recommended content?
It's almost like people don't want to be watching pewdiepie with their friends on their account and have "SUPER HOT BIGDICK SHEMALE TAKES HORSE COCK pt.3" show up in their reccomends or something.

I think they changed it now but remember when all the porn sites had the "like" buttons everywhere that would spam it over your facebook and shit. Because apparently gramma needed to know about the Brazilian Midget Fart porn you are into.
