Steve1989MREInfo / Steve1989 / Steve Thomas - that guy that eats old MREs

Eh, Steve only uploads in batches often months apart between batches so I either suspect hes been busy with his job, or recording didn't go as expected?
I think theres huge numbers of videos that arent uploaded. I forget which video but i watched on where he had just bought an MRE and tried it, then said a few months ago he had recorded another menu from the same country, and included that old but never before seen review in its entirety. Plus the 100 year old cigarette video is several mashed together and i think he even says he recorded them a year ago. So yeah its strange but im sure he has a very sincere reason for it and would let people know why if they asked.

I still want the lore of when he contracted botulism poisoning from one of the rations he ate, no idea if it was from a ration he ate on video or if it was off camera.

As I recall it was a Ukrainian(or similarly Eastern European nation to my Burger ignorance and hazy memory) from before he was doing videos. I also think it was E Coli. I'm about 60% sure about the details from watched videos and a life 2017 interview.

More recently, he was hospitalized because of a chinese mre with green food in it. I think the story from the interview/wikipedia is a different mre.

Steve said it was Ukranian and he has called what he got both botulism and E.Coli in different videos and interviews; so I'm not sure what he really got from it other than it was really bad.

I want to say it was an earlier video with a US MRE from Vietnam War era. He wasn't wearing gloves or a face mask and then not only got something sprayed into his face, but he also cut his hand on a can. He even mentioned that he'd probably catch botulism from that MRE.

It was a chink ration that nearly killed him. As mentioned, though, he also got mild botulism from a Ukrainian ration.

Other way around I thought. Steve got sick from the Chinese one but nowhere near as bad as the Ukrainian one which gave him a really hefty hospital bill. It was also before he started the video reviews.

I'm almost certain he's referred to that Ukrainian one as the most expensive MRE he's every eaten due to the medical bills.

You are correct, sir, yes. From a GQ article on the man:

In 2015, Thomas was hospitalized with E. coli after eating a less-than-one-year-old Ukrainian ration from a “bad batch.” He didn’t have health insurance at the time, and the $15,531 medical bill for his recovery made that ration the most expensive he’s ever had.

Steve lives! With a 45 minute Thanksgiving Feast.
I wonder if he's actually planning to go into business making this kind of thing. He has a commercial freeze drying machine now.
I feel like there is a big chance of Steve producing actual MREs in the future for people to buy, or at least share with fellow MRE folks. Either way he's pretty much sold me on the idea of buying a freeze drier.
A lot of the components he put together looked really good. There aren't many people who know more about it than he does, either.

His portions are a little too generous for a standard MRE and the whole set looks rather unpractical for travel use - but it might work as an emergency MRE I guess?

Only real fail is the coffee and that's because he put cream into the coffee before freeze drying it. He claims it's still great, but coffee with separated milk solids is always kinda off-putting. I also thought the coffee amount was excessive but he later comments it wasn't enough?!

He also comments that green bean casserole wouldn't preserve well unless you used fresh beans over canned + Pumpkin Pie doesn't quite freeze-dry well enough. But man, he was delighted with his cranberry sauce and sweet potato casserole.

I think he made the thanksgiving mre as a holiday special type of thing. He knows that the portions are too big, but its thanksgiving and he wanted the video to be festive. He is just trying to have fun for the holidays.
Side note, I wonder if he has any idea this thread exists, he doesnt seem like he uses the internet too often, so i highly doubt he has any idea he has a thread on an internet bullying forum.
