Yeah one of my friends ended up with a scarlet king, which I know are also lizard eaters. Tried catching skinks and other lizards for it but she eventually let it go because it was still being picky (it was originally wild caught anyway). Other friends with native permits have tried mud snakes, which are amphibian eaters, but unfortunately didn't have much luck even with offering them fresh tadpoles. Though I'm sure any of the cali, eastern, or mexi kings will gladly eat any lizard, snake, or anything since kings are garbage disposals. One of my friends rescue king even got a f/t baby blue jay once (from a rehabber who wasn't able to save it), which was a good natural meal for an originally wild caught snake (rescued from a hoarding situation!).Thank you, corals are mainly snake eaters but can eat lizards as well. A lot of snakes like that don’t do so well on rodents. I try to think about and regard them more through the eyes of a snake or lizard breeder to get past that stigma about cannibalism or straying from the standard food items. I find that even my colubrids tend to like the occasional lizard, chick or smaller snake, like my gopher snakes.
You could do well with a copperhead if you already have an understanding of handling centipedes or nippy snakes. They’re pretty popular as beginner hots because they’re local to a lot of areas in the states so antivenom is always available, though you most likely wouldn’t need it. Vietnamese are the nastiest of the S dehaani species, so if you can handle them then any other hot invert should be a walk in the park save for maybe fat tails and death stalkers.
I have friends with permits that have had varying luck with water and ribbon snakes which like fish. Problem is so many of those snakes are wild caught and have issues. Lots of inverts have the same problem.
I've worked with copperheads a bit and helped care for one for a week. I just want to get more experience and not be in an apartment before I get one of my own. They're lovely snakes. Honestly, the water snakes and my friends tiger rat snake are probably way meaner lol
The only snakes I currently own are two normal balls. Not very exciting, but they're both rescues and I care about them a lot. After loosing my job I'm staying with my friends who have a lot more animals so I can focus on helping care for the animals instead of doing unhealthy, self destructive shit. I just need to make sure not to forget thawing feeders again!
