Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

He's on HRT, he confirmed it in a reply to his own tweet.

His stepfather was a failed Hells angel who was a bit of a cunt, a mum who was a loser and he was on the poverty line. I don't doubt he had it rough, his behavoir carries a lot of obvious scar tisssue-a lot of the kids I grew up with have simular issues, he was very obviously desprived of love which explains a lot.
Yeah, that's right, a biker.

I cant believe I once liked this guy.
I was never a big fan, he always struck me as way too cynical, though sometimes he was right on the money with his reviews, I'll never forget Assassin's Creed 2, which I remember thinking "this is kinda shit" but it got rave reviews from pretty much everyone... except Jim Sterling.

But I pretty much wrote him off once he gave The Evil Within a bad review, which is one of my favorite games in recent years.

The Jimquisition needs an Inquisition to stop this lardass from entering a troon cocoon. At this point I am afraid he is too far gone, and the merciful thing to do is take him out behind the shed and "send him to a nice farm upstate".

As a bonus, it also mentions him claiming to have bipolar II disorder, and complex PTSD. [archive] Yeah, PTSD, you know, from all the wars he's been in where he was forced to watch his fellow soldiers gutted and children getting Epstein'd. That's what Jim went through, right? Why else would someone be diagnosed with complex PTSD?

Either of the examples you mention would be regular PTSD unless he had been watching this happen for years without a break and without power to do anything about it. CPTSD is a type of PTSD that occurs from exposure to severe and prolonged stress without relief, such as an abusive childhood,
/family, involvement in a cult, etc. Usually not linked to any particularly memorable incidents like the ones you described, its just consistent, constant exposure that dulls you and changes you, shaping your reactions to things, removing you from your emotions, giving you all kinds of "interesting", deeply-engrained coping mechanisms.

Given how fucked up they are by definition, it is not surprising many lolcows have it, I'd be willing to believe at least half of the cows who say they have it, really do.

The thing is, at the end of the day it's not a fucking excuse for your shitty behaviour, only an explanation. Learning how to function outside of the environment you maladapted to is incredibly hard, and can be traumatic in and of itself, but only you can be the one to decide it is worth it to put in the hard work to undo the shitty coping mechanisms as best you can, and learn new and better coping mechanisms.

Decades ago, someone (Pavlov, I think?) did an interesting and kind of fucked up experiment with dogs where he traumatised them into shells of their former selves and then tried to see how they recovered and how long it would take. It turned out that only the dogs who received some additional small-scale stress after the trauma recovered. It makes sense, you have to build resilience and learn that you can overcome difficult things, and the only way to do that is to have a manageable level of difficulty thrown in your way. If you avoid that to the point that you even avoid the stress of recognising and accepting your current cope isn't working, you can't recover.

Then you end up becoming like the people featured here: avoiding all difficulty out of fear. They dig themselves into holes with their shitty coping mechanisms, get depressed and angry when it doesn't work (through their fault or external circumstances), then feel powerless to change their circumstances and incredibly scared. They only know how to avoid things that scare them. they don't know how to tackle them and conquer them. So their response is to lash out, and/or dig themselves a new or deeper hole to try and escape the current one they are in. They also often develop narcissistic-seeming qualities as depression pushes your focus inwards. They are so focused on how they can't change their circumstances the only thing left to do is fear the world and what it might throw at you next. The only way to cope with fear is to shudder in the corner forever or get angry at whatever is causing your fear. How dare it make you feel this way, and how dare it threaten you? It's not fair.

If that doesn't describe Jim Sterling's career and personal mindset to a T, I don't know what does.
