Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

I swear I remembered this man being respectable at one point.
The moment he left Destructoid he went full retard imo, chasing the algorithm and boring drama over some fucking loser like digital homicide.

On and on he's droned, literally to the same song every video for like the last decade.

I honestly don't think he'll ever be relevant again after this stunt.

I remember when Breath of the Wild came out and every critic was universally sucking its dick and Sterling DARED to give the game a 7/10 as "good but flawed" and the Zelda fanboys absolutely lost their shit. He used to have a pretty banging theme song too.
Thing is, after that he went through a phase where he would not shut up about how much he thinks the game is overrated every time he did a video about Nintendo.

Heck, speaking as someone who loves the game, him giving it a 7/10 wasn't my main problem with the review, but rather his reasoning for it, that being his refusal to try to look for ways to approach the combat beyond just weapon usage or running away. He even went so far as to claim the game was limited in options, rather than look for ways to experiment with the physics and the like. The same thing popped up when he reviewed Prey 2017 as well.

But because he's Jim F****** Sterling son (at least at the time), he got a lot of people to side with him and also turn against the game, thinking that because he went against the norm of all the high praise for the game, that automatically made him somehow more "credible and unbiased" or some crap. Heck, that's what led to a lot of his initial fanbase.

Yeah his Sandy Hook/Budd Dwyer video was incredibly powerful.

I never even considered doctors fucking up the surgery. That's fucked up

There is almost no way *not* to fuck up SRS surgery. I'm not exaggerating, we have at least one thread here where plenty of people post pictures and even the decent ones only look decent at first glance. We do not have the technology to do it. There are also no set procedural guidelines so every doctor has their own method. The only ones who do it are the ones who see it as a challenge to get good at, which implies practising and fucking up multiple times. On their fellow human beings. Not to mention trying to turn genitals into other genitals is just crazy.

Oh and did you know if there are complications most doctors or surgeons won't touch it, they just refer you back to the person who fucked it up in the first place, who has every incentive to cover it up if they can't fix it (which they can't), and convince you not to take action against them.

The trans community should be up in arms about these butchers taking such blatant advantage of them, treating them like cash cows and medical experiments. Instead they are fiercely defensive and place these doctors on a pedestal.

It reminds me of the people who are dysphoric over wanting a disability and go to a doctor to get a limb removed although even they don’t have to do something like regularly dilate.

What is most baffling to me are the people that are celebrating this. I can only assume it's a "you're as fucking mental as I am!" kind of thing.

Misery loves company.

That plus cultists get their dopamine hits from recruiting new members.

His video about violence after the Sandy Hook shooting really stuck with me; particularly the bit where he showed Budd Dwyer's actual suicide footage to prove a point.

That was a really hard hitting episode, I'm surprised the Escapist were ok with it, though at the time everything on the Internet was less cucked. I couldn't even imagine him making anything like it these days (or youtube actually leaving it up). I bet Jim himself wouldn't stand behind that, his most impact full video, if you asked him today. It was the same feeling watching the Brenton Tarrant video despite happily gunning down everyone I can find in a game so his point still stands.

Regarding the srs debate, there is going to be a lot of law suits flying around in 10-15 years for both surgeons and therapists. Both are taking vulnerable, mentally ill people and rather than telling them they need help are convincing them that life altering medications and surgery are the answer (then when they aren't it's 50% time). The problem with the "informed consent" defence is these kinds of deeply mentally ill people cannot consent and the medical professionals are supposed to be the ones looking out for them.

I don't want to powerlevel too much, but this is relevant. Even a relatively small hormonal imbalance can properly fuck you up. I had an endochrine problem for a bit that took a long time to diagnose and treat, and before I went on meds for it I was really, really, seriously ill, almost completely disabled some days. Hormones govern pretty much every major organ and chemical system your body has, and even having a slight imbalance can cause your entire body to malfunction. I felt like I was fucking dying, and if I didn't get treatment, I might have. And the hormone concerned wasn't even one of the more impactful ones - such as estrogen.

I can only imagine the effects of pumping huge amounts of estrogen into a male body that doesn't have a deficiency (male bodies do naturally produce small amounts, just as female bodies produce small amounts of testosterone, but for different purposes). Estrogen affects EVERYTHING in the body, just about. Go to the wikipedia page and read just how many interactions it has with both different organs/systems and also with other hormones. Everything from protein synthesis to lung function. Artificially adding it to the body would affect literally every system in the body, and not positively. The hormonal systems in the body work on balance, and the entire endocrine system has, as its core function, to keep those hormones balanced, as even a slight error can be disastrous for the body. The entire body. And some idiot wants to pump himself full of it because of politics and Twitter clout.

I'm surprised the suicide rate is as low as it is quite frankly, though that excludes other deaths by organ failure due to severe hormone imbalances.

A further observation. Putting "Hyperestrogenemia" (the scientific word for excessive blood estrogen) into Wikipedia redirects to the main page for estrogen. Specifically it redirects to the URL:

Guess what? The "Health risks and warning labels" section of the estrogen article that Hyperestrogenemia used to redirect to has disappeared since that redirect was made. The wikipedia article for estrogen has been deliberately edited to contain NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER on conditions (natural or artificial) that involve having too much estrogen. I'm going to take a wild guess that this edit was made by a man in a dress.

WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EASTASIA.

And like all fashion statements, it has a shelf life.

A lot of people seem to think that current trends and fashions will continue forever. They don't.

We're approaching the end of the social justice trend, but out-of-touch 30-somethings don't want to admit it. Playing Among Us and dying your hair a bright colour doesn't mean you're still cool with the young people.

I say this because they're making these permanent changes to ride a wave that's already crashed on the shore.

Let's look at autism. Back during the 00s there was a large push for autism. It seemed like every other week some C-list celebrity or has been actor was coming out as autistic or on the spectrum. They would get an article in chat magazines and then go back to being forgotten. We're seeing the same thing now with everyone Ellen Page to the Wachowski brothers (and Jim Sterling) coming out as trans for another 15 minutes of fame before going back to being forgotten.

You're wrecking your body and your life for attention that will be forgotten as soon as the next in disability or disorder becomes popular.
It was the same when everyone and their grandma "came out as bi" during 2007-8. You had stars like Gaga and Nicki Minaj going " im bi", even though they have never been in a public gay relationship. It is a trend and it will die down. The only thing is claiming you are bi or have the tism dosent affect your health or well being. Having ceĺebrities troon out in public will surely fool some kid into fucking up his-hers life with dangerous hormone treatments or even surgery.

There won't be

I've commented this on the SRS thread on PG but you don't understand how doctor's, especially surgeon's behave and act, and what they can get away with.

To put this into context, my friend almost died last summer. He fell in a corn harvester. His legs looked like you would expect from falling into a massive spinning deathtrap. He was missing 4 inches of his Sciatic nerve. That's the big one. He had 0 bloodflow to his feet, and he had more corn in his meat than a taco bell burrito.

But this wasn't what almost killed him. What did was that instead of cutting off the legs, he went into a 12 hour surgery to restore blood flow. Now remember, his sciatic nerve was severed above the knee. That is, optimistically, 5 years before there is any chance of it coming back online. Overwhelmingly it never does. But some of the best surgeons in the nation painstakingly restored bloodflow. Once it was restored, he almost immediately got blood poisoning, lost all kidney function, and nearly died of organ failure because everything below the knee was still hamburger helper.

But the fact bloodflow was restored was a terrific accomplishment. Everyone congradulated the vascular surgeon because this was basically one of the most impressive resotration's of bloodflow he'd ever done. There was no "you made the situation 10x worse" it was only "look how close you came to working a miracle"

This is the norm from my time spent around doctors. Good luck getting them to change their mind, especially if you look like the kind of person who gets experimental SRS

There are still flashes of inspiration from the man, on paper their's nothing particulary wrong about his takes on AAA or gameplay. Where he crashes and burns is his projection of his personal subjective views as moral absolutes (ofwhich their are very few in life) and his inability to disconnect autistic internet slapfights from realistic assesments of either gaming culture or irl culture.

Frankly I don't give a shit about his transition, he could call inject mellanin and graft dicknipples onto his body or be the whitest straigtest chad in the USA. If his video's were good it wouldnt matter but they arnt so fuck him.

Kim Justice is a good antithesis - also, British, fat and trans. But makes interesting videos full of research rather than their political opinions, so I couldn't care less what they want to call themselves.

It's pretty interesting that ~10 years ago (well into his mid-twenties) Jim was very vocally misogynist and really into calling women feminazis. His unbridled spergouts about terves makes sense now.

more awful tidbits
quoting to say that I posted about this incident (with the link in the quote) on my twitter without directly tagging or replying to his account and my account was permab& kek

They think social justice is the new civil rights and will be the paradigm for the next 60 years.

Listen to me when i say this

You can stop being metrosexual, drag, and wearing makeup at any time. You can't stop being trans. Gender reassignment will change you forever. There's a reason why the suicide attempt rate is 50%. Think about this before even considering gender reassignment.
100% this. Universal gender reassignment surgery and HRT has been the biggest win for big pharma and the medical industrial complex in history. It's so destructive that, once they get in, they're basically guaranteed customers for the rest of their miserable existence. Even if they try to back out, they are afflicted with permanent medical conditions that will require constant treatment.

These are the quintessential treatments that turn otherwise healthy individuals into perpetual patients. A big win for the shareholders. Soon Pfizer will change its logo into a trans flag as a sign of solidarity for all these poor oppressed individuals. Lobbyists will push to have subsidized Hormone vending machines placed all over the country so anyone can initiate the transition at anytime, without any interference from potentially bigoted doctors. In fact, the first dose is free.

This will obviously be heralded as the great liberation from the oppression of biological sex. Any information to the contrary will obviously be transphobic fake news that will need to be suppressed.

As I say about all of "professional Youtuber/Internet Star reviewers", the worst ones are only in for the said "hot takes" and sheepherding general or sensational opinions and entitled fringe autist basement nerd mentality for clicks than for any appraisal for future artistic endeavors and cultivation of appreciation and analysis of what makes entertainment and media good. As someone on KiwiFarms has brilliantly said somewhere else not too recently, "Don't ever cater to the spergs and crazies of your fanbase; you'll drive away everyone else and sink your work into a hole with them, and even then, they'll never be satisfied". For the longest time, the 2010s have proved every bit of this gem of wisdom very true, and for video games, instances of "reviewing" are brilliant displays of self demonstrating consumer exceptionalism that are self defeating in every wonderful way.

I can honestly care less about what you like and what opinions you hold on video games. The problem about this comes when one uses their opinions unsubtly to garner attention for the sake of fame and money without anything but moving your lips and putting yourself in front of a camera to garner clout. That's not doing anything for the world of entertainment or art. This is a pretty general statement, but Jim over there is right up there with Spoony and friends trying to leech off the Angry Video Game Nerd legacy and even treading upon /v/ waters for some popularity.

That's why I always wince a bit when cross-dressers get mocked for not getting the chop.

I don't like Sophie Labelle, but not getting his dick cut? Good move, that.
