I just watched the first episode of season 4 and what the fuck is happening?
A 9 year skip into the future in the crimean war with titans?

Isayama was fed up with writing about giant naked zombies, and wanted to write about how the Nazis were totally awesome and how the Jews were totally responsible for their own extermination, and how Japan obviously would've won WWII if they had giant Kaiju, and god powers.

It's so simple.

The second episode seems to also be quite good as well. Though I've noticed some of the movements felt computer generated yet it didn't seem to be too distracting...

Aside from that the music, lighting, and general direction of the animation is pretty good.

If this keeps up to the end then I guess AOT is probably going to be carried hard by the anime adaptation especially with most AOT fans being those who watch the anime rather than read the manga.

I wonder how this will all go in 16 episodes though unless they make some pretty big cuts or there is a second cour.

It will be funny if the anime ends up being actually good and replaces the manga, like a reverse Game of Thrones.

"Jean had a daydream where he, and Mikasa had a baby" - because he had crush on her since day he met her for first time.
"Falco's revealed to be a titan-shifter" - yeah, no shit he's a shifter. It's because: 1) he was struck by Niccolo with bottle of wine that contained Zeke's spinal fluid, 2) Zeke shouted titanizing everyone who tasted it, 3) he ate Galliard, his predecessor as Jaw Titan.
"Titans can swim now, even though they're supposed to go inactive in the dark and in/underwater" - you clearly didn't pay enough attention - only small titans become inactive during the night, bigger ones could gather enough energy from sun to be active whole night, also swimming isn't a problem considering they are lighter then they look.
"APPARENTLY, FALCO CAN FLY, AND JUST FORGOT HE COULD DO SO" - again, this can be explained by that his first shifter transformation wasn't complete
"The nukes did nothing" - no nukes in this world.
"Additionally, the worldbuilding has also been nuked yet again..." - why?
"Turns out Hange did die for nothing 'cause Eren's been back at Paradis this entire time" - What the hell are you talking about? Eren is obviously inside skull of Attack Titan ultimate form. Hange sacrificed herself to slow down few colossals so plane could fly up.
"Eren can summon past titan shifters....kind of...and use them to fight for him. He uses this power to have a crying Bertholdt attack Reiner" - It's clearly implied that Ymir (for anime only - Ymir the first titan, not Historia's dyke lover) summons those past shifters.
"Other races exist, along with other countries" - we knew it since first chapter - Mikasa's mother was asian like, later to be revealed be named Hizuru and existance of blacks was confirmed when Boyega appeared.

This is a very minor nitpick in the grand scheme of the plot, but it's insane how much of the story hinged on Ymir (the tomboy, not the girl who let the pigs out by mistake) simply not saying anything about the world. The moment Eren revealed himself as a shifter, that would have been the perfect opportunity to come forward, explain the truth about Marley and Paradis, and so on. But she inexplicably plays along with Bert and Reiner when they capture Eren in season 2, never says a single word about Marley, and then peacefully goes off with them to be eaten by the next shifter for....some reason? Like if her whole character is "lesbian for Christa" you would think she would have maybe gave her waifu a heads up.

At some point if the anime wants to salvage the story-line its going to have to come up with an original ending and change a major twist in the story to save it from going completely off the rails.

- the soundtrack has lines in German, not Yiddish
- the second OP in particular is incredibly reminiscent of classical German music, imperial march music specifically
- the name of the Eldian royal family is fucking Fritz and Historia looks like the Aryan ideal, blond and blue-eyed
- the architecture inside the walls is classically German
- the last names of the Eldians are also German (Jäger & Ackerman means "hunter" & "field worker" respectively, these are professions from which Jews were historically barred.) The only one who has anything resembling a stereotypically Jewish-German last name is Jean (Kirschstein) but that's also a name a non-Jew might have. That's because German-Jewish last name are largely location names, ie, they took their names from the villages where they lived as opposed to their profession.
- the ancient Eldians are depicted as Romans. For a long time, Germany considered itself descended from the Roman Empire and up until the Napoleonic wars, the area that is now Germany was part of the Holy Roman Empire.
- Ymir and that giant world tree in the P A T H S dimension are clear references to Norse mythology. Nazis were obsessed with Norse mythology.
- Germans actually have a history of, y'know, trying to conquer the world, inflicting genocide on other races and being hated for it

There's probably more but I'm too lazy to remember.

I think doing Jewish and German stuff at the same time is the whole point though, Isayama wants to play on people's sympathies for Jewish people and extend that to Germans and Japanese by combining the three into Eldians. The whole thing is clearly inspired by postwar japan even in the beginning and I imagine that was the initial scope before he decided to expand. Rome and Napoleon are relevant and blatantly referenced too. It's all there.

So the correct term we should be using in this thread is Norse Napoleonic Imperial Japanese Roman Nazi Jews.

I love how he set Zeke up for this big Griffith style reincarnation where he's standing all muscled and naked posing dramatically, it was clearly an reference to the end of the tower of conviction arc, but then it turns out his entire fucking secret plan is "the Eldians can only be happy if they get neutered because we deserve to get genocided" because of his daddy issues and then he was left pathetically crawling on the ground begging Eren not to run erendidnothingwrong.exe and not only that, as of now Zeke is either A so weak willed he was converted, B now a zombie slave, or C such a pussy he's just doing what Eren wants out of fear. His entire arc is hilarious. Look at how terrifying he was when we first saw his titan and it killed Mike or how intimidating he was when he made Reiner look like a bitch after a duel, or both when we first saw him creating titans during the retaking Shiganshina arc. Now we've got Sally Crypants McSelfhatingjew and every bad thing that happens to him is really really funny.

Honestly I kinda like how pathetic he is, you don't have to respect a villain or find them charismatic for them to be effective, I dislike how completely ineffectual he is in fights after Shiganshina but seeing his monkey fuck up some blimps was cool. I'd like to see him actually fight another titan juuuuuust once. We've never seen that once, even the duel with Reiner wasn't actually shown. I get that was for effect but I wanna see him grapple with Annie or some shit if he's really that good.

What was once a talented, intimidating, compelling, and interesting character is now just a whiny, self-loathing, misanthropic pile of shit who constantly sobs about how the Nazis did nothing wrong.

I think Zeke is a byproduct from Iseyama's writing style as it seems Iseyama likes to make a different villain the focus of each new arc with the early arcs being more about the titans as a group, then Annie, then Reiner and Bertolt, then Kenny/Royal Government/Rod Reiss, then Zeke, then Marley, then the Yaegerists, and then Eren at the end.

Tl;dr-Some kid let out some pigs two millennia ago, and Isayama the world thought that was a good enough excuse to genocide an entire race.

I think Zeke is a byproduct from Iseyama's writing style as it seems Iseyama likes to make a different villain the focus of each new arc with the early arcs being more about the titans as a group, then Annie, then Reiner and Bertolt, then Kenny/Royal Government/Rod Reiss, then Zeke, then Marley, then the Yaegerists, and then Eren at the end.

Honestly Zeke's motives were not really that surprising to me anyway given the way he talked to the residents of Paradis seemed to have been out of pity for their existence so him wanting to neuter them was not really that left field. Though he did definitely become pathetic given that he became Eren's pawn while thinking they were equals with a similar goal.
