A sustained effort is under way to deny children access to literature. Under the slogan #DisruptTexts, critical-theory ideologues, schoolteachers and Twitter agitators are purging and propagandizing against classic texts—everything from Homer to F. Scott Fitzgerald to Dr. Seuss.

Their ethos holds that children shouldn’t have to read stories written in anything other than the present-day vernacular—especially those “in which racism, sexism, ableism, anti-Semitism, and other forms of hate are the norm,” as young-adult novelist Padma Venkatraman writes in School Library Journal. No author is valuable enough to spare, Ms. Venkatraman instructs: “Absolving Shakespeare of responsibility by mentioning that he lived at a time when hate-ridden sentiments prevailed, risks sending a subliminal message that academic excellence outweighs hateful rhetoric.”

The subtle complexities of literature are being reduced to the crude clanking of “intersectional” power struggles. Thus Seattle English teacher Evin Shinn tweeted in 2018 that he’d “rather die” than teach “The Scarlet Letter,” unless Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel is used to “fight against misogyny and slut-shaming.”

Outsiders got a glimpse of the intensity of the #DisruptTexts campaign recently when self-described “antiracist teacher” Lorena Germán complained that many classics were written more than 70 years ago: “Think of US society before then & the values that shaped this nation afterwards. THAT is what is in those books.”

Jessica Cluess, an author of young-adult fiction, shot back: “If you think Hawthorne was on the side of the judgmental Puritans . . . then you are an absolute idiot and should not have the title of educator in your twitter bio.”

An online horde descended, accused Ms. Cluess of racism and “violence,” and demanded that Penguin Random House cancel her contract. The publisher hasn’t complied, perhaps because Ms. Cluess tweeted a ritual self-denunciation: “I take full responsibility for my unprovoked anger toward Lorena Germán. . . . I am committed to learning more about Ms. Germán’s important work with #DisruptTexts. . . . I will strive to do better.” That didn’t stop Ms. Cluess’s literary agent, Brooks Sherman, from denouncing her “racist and unacceptable” opinions and terminating their professional relationship.

The demands for censorship appear to be getting results. “Be like Odysseus and embrace the long haul to liberation (and then take the Odyssey out of your curriculum because it’s trash),” tweeted Shea Martin in June. “Hahaha,” replied Heather Levine, an English teacher at Lawrence (Mass.) High School. “Very proud to say we got the Odyssey removed from the curriculum this year!” When I contacted Ms. Levine to confirm this, she replied that she found the inquiry “invasive.” The English Department chairman of Lawrence Public Schools, Richard Gorham, didn’t respond to emails.

“It’s a tragedy that this anti-intellectual movement of canceling the classics is gaining traction among educators and the mainstream publishing industry,” says science-fiction writer Jon Del Arroz, one of the rare industry voices to defend Ms. Cluess. “Erasing the history of great works only limits the ability of children to become literate.”

He’s right. If there is harm in classic literature, it comes from not teaching it. Students excused from reading foundational texts may imagine themselves lucky to get away with YA novels instead—that’s what the #DisruptTexts people want—but compared with their better-educated peers they will suffer a poverty of language and cultural reference. Worse, they won’t even know it.

Mrs. Gurdon writes the Journal’s Children’s Books column.

I'm Moby Dick. What's everyone else working on memorizing?
I guess I'll take a bunch of folktales. Next time your kid is fucking around send them my way and I'll tell them the version of Puss in Boots where Tom the Miller's son gets his head cracked open and he touches his own brain.
I worry about homeschooling my kids. That lacking the education background, I won't be able to teach them properly and they will be at a disadvantage.
Nah. Between Khan academy and any number of amazing books, you'll be fine. I can even recommend a whole lot from my personal collection.

That's because it does. These are the same idiots who would've objected to Operation Paperclip because "Nazi scientists are Nazis."

It's at this point that public schools prove they are worthless. If the onus is on the parents to educate their own children on Shakespeare, Homer and Dr. Seuss, then what good are schools when they increasingly refuse to do their own jobs?
I'm drunk. Let's be as clear as that can be. With that said, I stopped reading the thread at this post because it... unpleasantly speaks for itself. Perhaps it is time that the general public, even if not with children, started taking an active political interest in children's education? Admittedly just a drunken thought...

The education of the children should always be an active political interest, and schools should start hiring teachers with degrees in the subject being taught instead of teaching degrees.

As someone who was home-schooled all the way to college- they're going to have to face the real world sooner or later, and regardless of if you think modern-day social dynamics are a trashfire- that's the world they're going to end up living in. Unless you intend to smother them in their sleep before they reach the age of majority or completely disconnect from modern society Amish-style, that hellish "proper socialization" is something they're going to need, or else the road ahead is really going to fuck them up.
As someone who knew people who were homeschooled-- it'd be strange to not have any exposure to those "modern-day social dynamics".

Probably 30 years ago now, I remember reading a satirical short story (and if anyone can remember the name, awesome) where a classroom was going to perform Hamlet, but the parent’s groups and special interests slowly interfered and started censoring things... they removed the dwarf because it was rude to handicapped people, they removed “something rotten in the state of Denmark” because it was xenophobic, etc. And finally the only part of the play left was:
“It is very cold. The hour sounds of five.”

We have now reached the point where that story is no longer a satire. And I want off this ride.

How does one fire a retard like this one?
You make them resign, a nice package delivered to their home address about a year and a half from now works really well.

Inside the package is the article cut out from the actual newspaper and an invitation to the teachers own funeral.

The invitation is quality work and tastefully done. Someone spent time on it and the materials while premium grade are available from most arts and craft stores.

Quality but generic makes any investigators time much more difficult. In addition to purchasing one or two items from different stores in different counties hides the trail even further.

Be sure to wait a few weeks and take some nice pictures of her using a telephoto lens of her jogging at the park, getting her shit coffee, or at her favorite restaurant.

Once she gets the package she will call the cops and she may even get exec protect but they will only stick around for about three month tops as they cost a ton.

Then comes a photo of her walking her dog and included is a bullet about six month later.

A word of caution, some printers may leave metadata on the print. Easy enough is to go to a community college library or public library and wait until someone leaves without signing off. Then just print what you need using their account.

Not that I am advocating any threats just sharing what tactics were used by drug cartels and how such actions made finding such a culprit much more difficult.

Once they realize the police cannot protect them and no one truly can in addition to not being able to live their lives as normal but in constant fear they usually just cease their offensive behavior.

I'm old enough to remember when the religious-right were busy storming public libraries demanding that classic literature be hauled out unto the streets and burned...Now it's the left. We are so totally fucked..

My wife is a retired English teacher, taught for 23 years and had her share of uprisings over her choices of titles she had her students read in her AP Honors class. She politely told the agitators to go fuck a donkey...
Back then, people had the sense to tell the fundies to fuck off. Now, HR smacks you down for standing up for yourself.

In order to have a society, you need to have a common history and common founding myths.

For all the bitching that the left does about Trump supporters living in an alternative reality, they are trying to discard the things that the founders of the US explicitly called on when writing our founding texts. Like I'm not educated enough to know whether they called on Homer by name or reference, but in their writings, they made it clear that they took a lot of their thinking from the Greeks and Romans, Christians, and English common law.

Complaining about this just sounds ignorant.

Like if you told Homer that he was a white European who had everything in common with the blue-painted barbarians and little or nothing in common with the wise men of India, Persia, and Egypt, he would be offended. May as well tell the man that he's an ape who points and grunts instead of using words.

But the Bantus are left out of this version of history, so into the trash it goes.

Isn't this how the terran empire got started?

No really. I remember reading some novel years ago where picard, posing as his mirror counterpart happens to look through the collection of classic literature to see if there were any differences compared to what he was familiar with, and noticed that things first started to appear different and crueler when he started skimming through the the odyssey, seeing that it had been heavily censored and altered to make the characters cruel and ruthless, and everything after that got progressively worse. He figured whatever caused such a major change in civilization happened right about that time

But not to worry, shakespeare was more or less the same

Khan Academy is absolute garbage. It's designed, unironically, for autists. If I had to watch that shit when I was a kid I'd blow my brains out. General pedagogy is also complete pseudoscience. The issue with properly homeschooling your kid, beyond the fact that he'll probably turn into Uncle Ted, is that while half the subjects are insanely easy to teach (just have your kid read a bunch of Dostoyevsky, Proust etc. for English and have him watch a bunch of history documentaries for history), Math and Science are far harder to teach. If you teach them like every retard teacher teaches them, you'll do those subjects an incredible disservice and make your kids hate them. Beyond that, it will take a considerable amount of time; which is something most parents don't have. If you properly teach those subjects, you have to have a deep understanding of the material and a passion for it. Again, that's something that 99 percent of parents don't have.

What do you recommend for sources on math and science?

So wait, wtf is wrong with it? The teachers were giving each other ass pats but none of them gave reasoning to why they want Odysseus Me-Too'd.
Just use your imagination!

Odysseus is a king, so he's automatically a representative of "The Man" and patriarchy in general. He goes and fights in the Trojan War, which is really just a bunch of toxic men squabbling over a woman like she's a piece of property. Meanwhile, his wife stays behind and tends to the home front, reinforcing outdated gender roles - as if we didn't already know that men and women are equally capable in battle.
The episode of the lotus-eaters trafficks in tired "war on drugs" themes about recreational substances making you lazy and apathetic, even though anti-drug rhetoric is really just a smokescreen for police persecution of Black people.
The strong, independent women that Odysseus meets on his journey, such as Circe, Scylla, the Sirens, and Calypso, are all portrayed as predatory or even monstrous.
And when Odysseus finally returns home to find new suitors courting his wife, he slaughters them in a fit of possessive jealousy without even considering a polyamorous arrangement, which clearly would have been the most logical solution to the dilemma for all involved!

*yawn*

”Shakespeare is an anti-Semite and racist”

Have these people ever read Othello, which was one of the first plays in Europe to have a black main character, or seen this speech in the Merchant of Venice?
Shylock said:
I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute—and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

The message of that speech, and you don't need a literature degree to work this out, is ”anti-Semitism is bad, Jews should have equal rights”. Shakespeare was the first playwright in Western Europe to include a Jewish character that wasn't a walking stereotype. How do these wannabe Cultural Revolutionaries manage to look at his work and call him a bigot?

Give kids books to read at home and then read with them. Take responsibility for exposing them to classic literature instead of letting the school system decide what they can and can't read.
Ironically back when nickelodeon ran the "election connection" song about democracy and how it works, one of the lines was "and no else can tell you how to vote ok, or you what to think or what to read or what to say." Only took less than two decades for that to become bullshit according to the left.
