Of course I can't deny that there might be some sort of bullshit somewhere in this system, especially when it comes to the larger associations, which are definitely full of bureaucratic crap and political relations.

I may have mentioned this before but anyway.

It grinds my gears when I'm watching a movie or tv show (usually a show) that takes place in current year or recent-years and a character from the American South sounds like Scarlett O'Hara or the judge from My Cousin Vinny. Dear actors, most of which have come from privileged big yank cities since nobody else has a chance to make it in acting apparently: we don't all sound like that, and the generalized super-slow Gone With the Wind accent doesn't truly exist anymore.

There are different Southern accents, and interestingly enough, people who are from the "north south" (i.e. North Alabama, North Mississippi) actually speak faster and some-what on par with other American accents than those in the south-South. People from the cajun areas of Louisiana don't sound like the people from Birmingham, AL. The farther down south you go, the slower the speech gets, but it still isn't truly "Scarlett O'Hara." Most of the people that do sound this way are part of the Silent Generation. Similarly, we don't really call the freezer or refrigerator the "ice box" anymore; the people that do are... 95% Silent Gen.

Also, I don't immediately have a link for this, but Southern accents or ways of speech in general are actually very fast in some aspects. We tend to combine 3+ words into one, which makes us finish sentences faster. For example:

" 'djaheetyet? = did you eat yet? or have you eaten yet?" (which is an entire complete sentence)

"yoostahcood" = used + to + could = used to be able to ("I yoostahcould do a handstand when I was little.")

This makes the Southern accent one of the hardest to understand with people learning English as a second language. Of course the exact pronunciation of these phrases and the speed at which they are spoken varies by individual.
