War Outcry as 'bean dad' forces hungry child to open tin can

A dad in the US who boasted about his parenting skills after telling his hungry nine-year-old daughter to open a tin of beans or go without food has caused outcry on social media.

After six hours the child successfully opened the tin and was finally allowed to eat, he said in now-deleted tweets.

The dad, a podcaster, claimed it was a victory for "good parenting".

But other parents accused him of neglect, while some suggested he invented the story to get attention.

Twitter users nicknamed the father "bean dad" as the incident caused another heated debate on social media, where parenting methods are a frequent cause of disagreement.

John Roderick, who is also a musician, shared the story on Saturday on Twitter, explaining that it began when his daughter asked him to make baked beans.

After she brought him a tin-opener and can of beans, he asked her how she thought a tin-opener worked, he said.

When she said she didn't know, he said he realised "a teaching moment just dropped into my lap".

"Apocalypse dad was overjoyed," he added.

Explaining that he wanted his daughter to learn how to open a tin of beans, he said she tried for six hours.

"She was next to me grunting and groaning trying to get the thing. I should say that spatial orientation, process visualization and order of operation are not things she… intuits. I knew this would be a challenge," he said.

Eventually she opened the tin and ate the beans, he explained.

The tweets were quickly shared widely as other users condemned the incident, suggesting it was poor parenting.

"I feel like it's super valuable to teach kids that they're not alone in the world and that there's no shame in asking other people for help and support," wrote journalist Jason Schreier .

Another user suggested Mr Roderick's approach was "ridiculous" - and that he should simply have fed his daughter, and then showed her how to use a can opener.

A handful of users agreed with the lesson Mr Roderick claims he taught his child.

"This teaches independence and personal growth. He did nothing wrong and in fact made me wish I did more of this," one wrote , while some fans of his podcast suggested that the story about his daughter was written in the voice of a character on his show and therefore should not be taken seriously.

Mr Roderick did not reply to media requests for comment but did defend himself on Twitter before later deleting his account.

"Six hours is the length of time between meals. Lunch at noon, dinner at six. They're literally saying child abuse," he wrote. He added that the backlash was "astonishing. My kid is fine everybody."

But a woman who said she was a teacher suggested it was a poor way to educate children.

"Kids learn best when they aren't hungry. Everyone learns differently and different approaches (eg. A guiding hand) are helpful, especially if/when someone's struggling," she said.

And author Racheline Maltese said that the lessons the child probably learnt were negative.

"Things you taught your kid: food must be earned; disordered eating in the forms of food hoarding and punishing herself by not eating; asking for help is futile," she wrote.

Some users also accused Mr Roderick of racism, sexism and homophobia after searching through his previous tweets.

However, his podcast co-host Ken Jennings defended Mr Roderick, calling him " a loving and attentive dad ", adding on Twitter: "There's no axis where any anti-Semitic screenshot represents any actual opinion I've ever heard from him."

On Sunday the podcast My Brother, My Brother, and Me said it would no longer be using Mr Roderick's music.

Not as fluent in autism as I used to be. So I'm not sure what you're saying.
My point is that you people call abuse now days was coddling when I was growing up. Some of you weren't beaten nearly enough as a child and it shows.
Stupid brat knows how to use a can opener now. Not sure how this crap gets posted along side reports of actual human trafficking, bestiality, and all manner of other horrors but that's this generation for you. Spoiled entitled brats. Low key kind of glad Biden's election heist worked. You'll all end up Benghazi'd and I'll be laughing. I'm actually kind of jealous of HAMAS right now. Should be good content though if it leaks.
Imagine having a mental breakdown over a child not being able to open a can of baked beans.

The number of cans that require a can opener have declined because pop lids exists. I was wondering why he didn't have the kid use an automatic can opener like i had as a kid and its probably because of the ubiquity of pop lids. I haven't seen the automatic can openers from my childhood in the targets or walmarts in my area either, they're mostly hand operated ones.
Uh...because they don't have one?

Other than people with arthritis or other hand issues, or who still have the one they got as a wedding gift during the Kennedy administration, I don't know anybody who has an electric can opener any more. And it's not because of pop-top cans; it's because having an electrical appliance taking up counter space in order to do the simplest of tasks--opening a can!--is kind of ridiculous. I grew up using them, but have never owned one as an adult, for that reason.

(And to take this even further off track, I used to work in restaurants, and opened lots of cans every day, and only one kitchen I worked in had an electric can opener. You got a pass to use it if you had a hand injury, but otherwise it doomed you to pussydom, so nobody ever used it. The owner's wife, who had never worked in a restaurant, insisted upon buying it, otherwise it wouldn't have been there.)

e: btw, everything comes with a poplid these days, canned vegetables, fruits, sauces, soup, meats, etc.
A lot of prepared, "convenience" food comes in cans with pop-top lids. Most food that is intended for use as an ingredient in homemade dishes, however, does not.

Canned chili? Baked beans? Lots of pop-tops. Plain canned beans, used to make your own chili or baked beans? No po-tops; you need a can opener.

Canned pasta dishes, or tomato soup? I assume a lot of brands now have pop-tops (I don't buy them, so I don't know). Plain canned tomatoes, used to make your own sauce or soup? No pop-tops.

Pop-tops appeal to shoppers who are looking for convenience. Maybe they're lazy; maybe they don't know how to cook; maybe they don't have access to a kitchen; maybe they're going camping and not having to bring a can opener is a plus. So ready-made, heat-and-eat food (and canned fruit) increasingly comes in pop-top cans. But ingredients--which are bought by people with less concern for convenience, and which will be used in a kitchen, where there is a can opener, still come in regular cans (which are cheaper to produce and use).

Now, t wrestle this comment back on-topic:

This guy and his kid are eating a lot of convenience food, if he thinks pop-tops are ubiquitous, because they're not. Which means his daughter's not learning to cook. But when she's 20, and living in a pod, she'll be okay--because by then the bugs (and baked beans!) will come in pop-top cans, and the soy will come in Capri Sun-like pouches, and she won't have to re-live the trauma of trying to figure out a can opener, or her father tweeting afterward that she's basically a retard.

I mean I'm with ya on not-news and blogging taking a front seat over actual issues, but much like the dude beating a wigger half to death with a can of Twisted Tea, this is an entertaining trainwreck and everyone involved ( sans the kid) is an asshat.

It's hard to say who seems more insufferable.

Racheline Maltese is a total lolcow. I first encountered her maybe 13 years ago; every few years or so she gets quoted somewhere on the internet, and I get to see if she's still a cow or not. The answer is always "Yes."

I just wanna know what fucking nine year old wouldn't put the fucking beans back the second dad said he wouldn't open it and go get some chips or something instead.
Yeah, this really adds to the #thathappened quality of this story. Unless the dad conveniently failed to tell his Twitter audience that she wasn't allowed anything else to eat, and had to get the can of baked beans open in order to eat at all. Given what a schmuck he obviously is, I wouldn't put it past him.

lol calm down, nigger
I was going to say, "Get help," but this will suffice.

Del monte, goya, bush and your store brand offers those things with pop tops. that's what i use to make chili and mulligan stew.

how badly do you want to get halal'd?

Pfft...baked beans. Everybody knows that when you are in a pinch the go to meal is Stoffers Macaroni and Cheese.

Back to reality:
This little girl is seven, I have no doubt she would know of someway to open up a can of baked beans.

What fucking moron thinks that teaching a child (who should have been taught this years ago) involves letting them fumble for hours with something would have been learned in maybe 10 minutes tops if he had just shown her what to do a couple of times? I know "critical thinking" is pushed hard these days, but not everything needs to be a 500 iq struggle session that ends with the reinvention of the wheel. Just show the poor kid what to do and have them memorize the steps

Even though from an outside looking in perspective I'm laughing, I'm disappointed this didn't end in "can of beans to the wiener" rage.

I'm trying to compare this to the abuse I suffered as a child (mostl at the hands of step parents) but I'd just sound like another attention whore if I went into details. But I will say at least the child wasn't force fed until they vomited then forced to eat said vomit. This incident is a non-issue.
grow up faggot noone cares about your problems
