In this case, there’s clearly no plan beyond rage, so losing is the only option.

Nah. Optics is just a shorter way of saying, "winning popular support" which is definitely not a media invention. The problem is that the right understands fuck all about optics. It's. a complicated thing and "Never do a violence" is often less effective than, "Pick targets a broad base of people on your general side of the aisle won't have sympathy for."

The left has done this very effectively with "Nazis" AKA any right wing street activists and most right wing artists, entertainers, and politicians. The right has similar concepts ("communists" and "socialists" AKA Antifags, BLM, smear-merchant journalists, and corrupt Democrat politicians) but they rarely go after these people in the same way. Most of the right just sits back and complains. And when some right wing extremist does do a violence, it's usually a white nationalist killing random brown civilians, which is very unoptical. Targeting random civilians in general is a bad idea for winning popular support, because they're highly relatable and sympathetic to the average Joe. It becomes embedded in the popular conscious that these people want to kill them/their friend/their neighbor. Backlash of the most extreme and determined kind is guaranteed from most of the populace. Attacking someone you have clear political beef with who your side already considers awful is a different story. While not all of them may vocally support it, I doubt many people on the left side of the aisle get too distraught over the Steve Scalise assassination attempt. Likewise, nobody on the right had a problem with what Rittenhouse did to three active leftist rioters. A bit different because he was acting in self defense, but let's say that some masked madman started just running up on left wing rioters and playing Minecraft with them. I doubt most people on the right would be distressed.
