From what I've gathered from what people have said here, she had a pretty bad growing up phase, and enough drama and stress to want to leave and get with someone who she thought wouldn't have her deal with that. An abusive environment can lead to that. So maybe it's pity.

I should really link those podcasts since they shed some light on Karen's situation at least from junior high. She gets into a bit of detail regarding her shitty upbringing; nothing to do with her parents, but she was a target for bullies in middle school who could get away with whatever they wanted because money. Actually, the pre-chat Discord group hates that guy's fucking guts and they're the ones who a-log him whenever he shows up. But I will agree completely that the group tends to take the Calli obsession a bit too far at times, so much so that there was a recent in-group callout over people not understanding what a parasocial relationship is, so while it does have some of the more "notable" Deadbeats participating in it, I would second that recommendation to avoid the group.
