When BLM rioted, "Blue Lives Matter" was all the rage with conservatives. Now they are establishment-controlled thugs and npc goons.
I wholeheartedly agree. Symbolically, having an angry mob storm the Capitol is... not just unprecedented, it's really bad on a fundamental political level. Again: Much less damage and human suffering than what BLM did the past few years, no argument there, but that doesn't make this harmless just on merit of being less violent. It's a direct attack against democracy, a big chunk (not a majority though) of the population exclaiming that they are completely disenfranchised with their goverment - I would say unjustifiedly so, but that's besides the point. The issue remains.Tame on the low-level, yeah. As yet (remember - we still have tonight and tomorrow) very minimal property damage and loss of life. Pipebombs in the RNC got remotely detonated.
However, symbolically, this is a much, much bigger deal. For people who say "fuck the rest of the world" they might not realize it, but @HumanHive is absolutely correct that this is a massive embarrassment for our government's image in the broader world.
Given our soft and to a lesser extent sharp power is what allows us to enjoy a relatively high standard of living and great leverage in economic trade deals above just what our markets guarantee us (ie, we offer our general stability as a country in terms of our currency and the ability for foreign capital to be safely invested, so on), this is way worse than a small town getting torched or Portland bloodletting itself.
BLM riots are worse when we compare them now... wonder how that'll balance out 4 years from now.
And while I don't think this makes the USA look weak, it certainly makes their politics look bad and bodes badly for the future.
