Sam is so untrained for a young cat it makes rehoming for her imminent death a pain just because emotionally needy cats are antisocial dont bond and are hard work, they defocate in protest for example. He bares the hallmarks of a cat not left alone during infancy hence the weird suckling thing he does its weird and cats like that sadly end up reaching ages like 7 and being either abandoned or sheltered because they are too aggressive to anything else.

Timmy in reverse is a well mannered cat yet elderly low maintenance yet actively abused many of us can agree the joy of an elderly cat that is semi dependable yet has their own personality.

Tbh, I don't think Sam would have trouble getting re-homed at first because he is pretty and people are stupid. If he would stay in his new home is a different matter though.

Cats from FAR worse homes than Chantal's, for instance legit 50-cat hoarder hovels, have positively blossomed after being rescued and given a good brushing, a clean box, decent food, and some quiet time. Cats are honestly such easy pets that it's quite baffling to me when they are neglected like this. Some will end up with behavioural problems after a fucked up life, but it'll usually be of the "This cat just doesn't like to be petted and he'll scratch if you try" variety. They don't need the same kind of rehab that troubled dogs require, because they don't have the same type of relationship with humans. Cats are way more attached to their environment than to their human, even though they do get very attached to their human. A nice living space with some enrichment for mental stimulation is the key to cat happiness.

The main behavioural problem/dealbreaker for re-rehoming cats is when they piss everywhere, but that is almost always either hormones (in unaltered males) or stress related. Remove the stress and the problem resolves itself (if it's not medical.) After living with Chantal, almost anyplace Sam could wind up would be a stress-free Shangri-La.

As she is a type 2 diabetic, she isn’t taking insulin (yet), in the first instance she would try and control it through diet and exercise (lol) and then she would be taking oral drugs like Metformin etc.
