The thing is...they're ALMOST right? But not for the reasons they think. Gamergate changed a LOT of people's minds. Many GGers were lefties that believed the right was dumb and bad until it happened and then they realized the left had betrayed them and the people on the right weren't so bad afterall. That's all it really was. Journalists and the people blaming Gamergate will never admit that if they had just held Zoe accountable for being an abuser and maybe even the people that they slept with apologized to Eron for even indirectly helping Zoe abuse him, they could have diffused this whole situation. At the end of the day, they let Milo and Bannon swoop in and acquire a new audience because the alternative would be listening to the criticisms, disavowing Zoe's behavior, and admitting they were wrong.

I think it's pretty unhelpful to use a left vs right wing lens to view gamergate, or really any "culture war" event. It is fundamentally a libertarian vs authoritarian conflict.

When most of the people involved in GG were starting out the religious right was the big bad and so the gaming world trended left. Along the way the religious right lost all its power but another group started to move in on the authoritarian racket trying to enforce their morality. Gamergate was the rebellion against the authoritarian who had worked their way into almost all the positions of power in the industry.

When Jack Thompson said the violent videogames were corrupting the youth everyone in gaming circles laughed and carried on. When Anita said the videogames were making everyone sexist the gaming outlets that were supposedly on the side of the gamers supported that totally and started delivering sermons on the evils of gamers. Zoe dick sucking her way through the industry with "journalists" desperately deflecting by calling the gamers misogynist was just the flame to the petrol these "journalists" had poured all over.

Gamergate wasn't the cause of Trump or anything related to him. They are both symptoms of the same source, authoritarians. There was no avoiding gamergate without the authoritarians giving up all their power and influence, if the outlets had apologised for the Zoe thing it would have only delayed the inevitable.
