Well that's not ominous at all.

I'm glad we can finally make good use of the national guard. They were unable to be useful this last year while numerous organized cells burned, looted, and murdered their way through at least 300 cities, destroying 100s of businesses, doing billions in damage, specifically targeting one race, with some riots still ongoing in the northwest, but they can be repurposed to deliver experimental and unnecessary drugs. That is fine, very nice.

I went to Aldi today in the American midwest. There were enough shoppers in there that we were getting in each other's way, but it wasn't really crowded. If anyone wasn't wearing a mask, I didn't notice. Moods seemed positive overall. Chatted a bit with an older lady about various stores and the length of their checkout lines. She seemed happy to talk with someone.

A friend's dad is supposed to be getting the vaccine soon. He's in his late 60s and has heart trouble and diabetes. Hope it works out for him.

It is. Not just speaking for myself here either.

I'm glad you're pointing out that it's more than "just a piece of cloth." On top of those other things, masks also cut out nonverbal communication almost entirely. Did you see somebody you haven't seen in a while? They can't see that subtle smile of seeing a friend. Did you receive some disappointing news? You can purse your lips and frown, but nobody will notice that anymore. Nonverbal communication is very important to us and is part of being human, but cutting that out pushes people apart.

It's the "faceless goons" trope writ large. If you can't see someone's face its easier to dehumanize them.

That said, there's mesh masks you can buy that look completely opaque when they're on your face but don't obstruct airflow at all. I really can't recommend them enough if you're in a nonfree state. Fuck masks.

Now I'm curious. We've got the mesh masks, saw a guy with a painball half-mask the other day (lol), what other options do we have?

I've got a friend who wears one of those and caught a bunch of shit at the courthouse over it. He was called to jury duty this week and the sheriff's deputies weren't going to let him past the security checkpoint. After arguing with the deputies about the mask meeting the letter of the law for five minutes and various threats from them, they went and got the judge who was displeased at being bothered over it. He realized my friend was someone who questioned authority a bit too much and summarily dismissed him from jury duty.

It's hilarious to see someone wearing one of them, it's pretty much a bigger fuck you than wearing mosquito netting.

Six months ago I cheerily proclaimed to every one I know that don't worry, once Florida has been open for three weeks the rest of the country will simply be FORCED to open up when it is clear that bodies are not filling the streets in the state.

There are people I have spoken to as recently as the last few weeks who when I mentioned Florida to them they responded with CONVICTION and AUTHORITY that Florida is that Republican state where everyone is dying because they aren't locking down and wearing masks. They know this because they stay informed by watching cable news.

So how do they explain California then? Blue as you can get with a Governor that loves throwing his weight around with lockdowns but the state, especially by their standards is barely doing any better than the red state 'plaguelands' that are totally going through a covid apocalypse right now. Not even going to bring up NY/NJ because that's just cheating.

I agree that they don't cite their sources transparently enough, if they cite them at all. It is being reported elsewhere, so it looks to be true:
