tl;dr dividing people by immutable characteristics makes them a lot easier to manipulate than dividing them by fungible characteristics.
This constant need to label and classify people by uncontrollable physical aspects is why the left keeps eating itself. Funniest part about the new chapter is that, after Kylo sends the fake Palpatine message, people immediately assume Alaina is Palpatine's new apprentice. To which Poe and Co, in trying to make Alaina look honest and innocent, come off as going "Come on, Alaina's too much of a fucking idiot to be Sidious's apprentice. She can't strategize, plot or deceive to save her life!". Leia calls Alaina into her office to try and determine whether Alaina is just pretending to be on their side like Palpatine did back in the day, but ultimately decides that Alaina, nor her mother, could be lying because... She cries. Because there's no way she could just be pretending to cry, so Leia immediately makes Alaina a general.
And again, the chapter utter fails at any worthwhile tone because Lilly keeps interjecting random jokes amidst what's supposed to be a serious scene. Alaina is feeling cornered as her closest friends start believing that she actually is a traitor and Lilly wants the reader to get engaged, but then immediately stops to have a bit about Alaina going "Hey, I only got one guy kill- Okay, there was that other one... Oh yeah, and Luke too; but I don't understand how the fuck that worked!" Or when trying to have the emotional moment of Alaina crying about her 'perfect, sweet, innocent mother who just wanted to love and make a difference', intercut with Alaina joking about feeling like she'd been called to the principle's office.
