Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The masks arent going anywhere for a long time. Everyone seems to be getting real optimistic, not just here but across social media, that there will be normalcy by summer. I keep seeing July 4th. I call bullshit. Not because I want this to continue, but because I dont believe this sort of thing will be dropped overnight. They're already preparing us for the bad news, that the vaccines dont stop spread or that they dont offer even close to 80% protection. They're also muddying the waters by releasing many different variations of the vaccine. I've heardthe "one shot" from J&J will be available soon. So we will now have to argue over which offers better protection, which is more risky, etc. Add in the new variants of COVID and this situation is getting more fucked, not less.

The only difference now is that your average US citizen is sick of it. Even the most serious of quarantine fanatics are wondering if theyll be able to go to outdoor concerts this summer or celebrate holidays in the winter. So the state and federal governments will loosen restrictions but the masks will stay. I cant even predict a time where the CDC/WHO/world governments say "Its all good guys! No more masks!" As long as COVID variants exist, there will be social pressure to keep the damn masks on.

I'm also avoiding the vaccine because I don't have 2 - 3 days to take off work to be sick with flu like symptoms. Also why the fuck would I take an injection that will make me fairly sick when I havent been ill in years? Healthy people really dont need all this medical intervention.

Based Sheriff's Office investigating a death and the surrounding circumstances:

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – A person in Placer County was reported dead hours after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

After some digging, I found the underlying article: https://www.poynter.org/business-wo...-and-colleagues-weve-lost-to-the-coronavirus/

The 500 includes retired journos ... so if the person was a journo at any one point in time in their life and they died from the ronies, they go on the list. It also is an international list. A cursory look at the list and most of them are over the age of 60. More gas-lighting as usual.

Just sad because the for the most part the oldbies were at least not snotty bloggers who think they are journalists because Buzzfeed gave them an article about "why it's -ist and -ism to ___".

Anyway, I have been sick for three weeks. At least my test was negative. But I relapsed yesterday. I was pressured by family to drag my half dead ass to the ER on the tenth. Now they want me to go again. It's 28 degrees. The hospital is only a few blocks away but there's no way. Can't make it. Not doing it. Sure it could be a false negative. But I think it's just a random virus like they said at the ER.

I don't air travel but the idea of these vaccine passports is terrifying. Very dystopian.

LOL remember the Summerfest lineup I posted yesterday (I think)? Well, looks like Halsey pulled out because she's cancelling her tour. Ohs Noes. At least the Beebs is still listed lol.

I think this is going to go on throughout all of 2021.

I wouldnt be surprised if ththe majority of announced tours and festival lineups are cancelled. It's not a good look for a liberal pop star to hold a mass gathering right now, or they may be painted as some kind of COVID denier or Trump supporter

The only festivals that will be going on are small, remote, and discrete gatherings. The kind of parties redditors and Twitter addicts dont even know exist. Just like all the bars that have their back doors open and work on a cash only system. These lockdowns have literally created underground markets for normal human activities.

The bars in the old milltown city near me have been open since before thanksgiving. Paper on the windows and the open sign isn't on. Also private club bars like Polish/Italian/whatever-American Club seem to always have full parking lots now. But the VFW building which had a bar has been closed and for sale now. Cash only. We're reliving a more shitty version of the 1920s with "speaks" and everything.

WuFlu has definitely created a parallel society. Normal people who basically ignore all the propaganda and go to work, go out, and live like normal. Vs Work-from-homers who just stay locked up in their pods and order everything from Amazon/grubhub/instacart. They just sit at home posting on reddit and consoom TV programming all day.

"Adolescent suicide during the pandemic cannot conclusively be linked to school closures. [...] In Clark County, 18 suicides over nine months of closure is double the nine the district had the entire previous year, Dr. Jara said. One student left a note saying he had nothing to look forward to. The youngest student he has lost to suicide was 9."

Las Vegas is opening up its school system because of the increase in kids killing themselves.

I work for the Clark county school district. There doesn’t seem to be much will by staff to get the kids back in schools. Most people are saying “we should just finish this school year online and try to get back to normal by August.” It’s a disgrace.

Indeed, failure is another crisis at the school, where flunking rates are 60 percent to 70 percent. That, in turn, is depressing the teachers and staff. The district is conducting a survey to see what supports it needs to queue up for its employees.
So let me get this straight, they're contracting people to conduct a survey of school staff to find out where they're lacking in things that result in an increasing rate of failure, and conversely deciding how to allocate more reosurces to support them and consequently reduce the rate of failure.

In other words, they're paying people probably large amounts of money to avoid the simple explanation that I could give for free: the kids aren't in school and don't care so they're failing.

These people are scum.

Careful outing yourself buddy. You do realize you are engaging in wrong think.

I know some of you don't believe me and think that I'm being optimistic, but I really don't think the U.S. is doing another national lockdown. We're way past that even being feasible economically or really just psychologically for the average American. Joe and his admin know they'd have to cough up biiig government bux to get even half of the states in compliance, and they sure as hell won't. Governors like DeSantis would fight it tooth and nail, and many police officers would refuse to enforce it as they've been doing.

What I do think will happen is that the masks will continue to be pushed, as will distancing, but as the year wears on and the vaccine campaign ramps up, people will start to seriously give up, especially as the weather grows warmer around the country.

Essentially, I think this is the last Year of the WuFlu. Yes, some autistic "protective" policy measures will stay in place, national panic will continue to ebb and flow, the media will milk it to death, and the CDC will change its mind about 100 times a day.

But ultimately, with the exception of the exceptional who refuse to leave their homes even after they're vaccinated, people are over this. The dissent will only grow. Give it time.
Yeah this. but it wont end because of any big revolution. most people will just stop caring. Which is basically what has already happend here in the south. Both pro and anti mask people get along fine here accept for the really crazy ones.

I'm going to weep when the true numbers come out in those that died as an effect of the lockdowns (suicides, OD's, domestic disputes, etc).

It probably easily numbers in the thousands (maybe tens of thousands).
More. My buddies are really getting sick of wellness check calls every shift.

Have said this before, will say it again, maybe ad infinitum. The societal damage from the ChiCom Flu will dwarf any economic damage. Economic damage can be fixed fairly quickly. The societal damage will take many years, if not decades, to heal. On top of all the individual tragedies is the total loss of trust and confidence in ANY level of government to do the right thing, on a par with what happened after Vietnam. I don't talk to that many people, but the ones I talk to always reply in the negative when I ask them if they'll be able to trust government to do the right thing in the future.

Just one more thing killing the idea of America.

That's a bit of a silver lining if anything. The more that people are skeptical of the government (and the media) the better, I think.
