It used to happen to me too on Firefox but then I upgraded my system, which upgraded FF as well (lunix), and now I can save images fine. Apparently the FF in my distro comes with some adjustments to about: config by default - I didn't change any image-related settings myself.

Try going to about: config (without the space, fucking autoreplace...), searching for "webp", and setting the values you find to this:
