You don't need a great conspiracy. The promise that the price of some titty skittles and a wig is finally going to make you comfortable in your fat skin is quite attractive. And saves you from all those icky things like honest introspection and effort.

Everyone's got Iphones made at slave labour factories with nets to stop people form jumping off the building. This idea that people who play vidya should care that the people making it are being overworked is ridiculous. Crunch is literally part of the industry when you join its something you are signing up for. I can understand the point where its burning out talented people who leave the industry but if its such a problem its on the employees to found studios where they try not to do that.
