This is more true then it seems, like most of the dwarves in the Hobbit exist purely so Tolkien could have some childish fun with their names. (Which is why they are named as they are) and have some jokes with them arriving early on, which is essentially Act one of the actual book. the presence of a lot of them, in the book is just mostly ignored, they are 'there' but not really. there was no need to keep them in the forefront. If you wanted to keep them in the movie, have the dwarves move in two groups or something.Also they needed to trim the dwarves. Keep the ones that had speaking roles and jettison the rest.
