I see your point, but beforehand it was a prestige thing. I won't bore people with the details, but it's the idea of sacrificing a big part of your life to live in service and guide others to salvation. It wasn't meant as an escape from one's sexuality, and once it began to be used as such sometime in the '60s that's when the ephebophilia began. Regardless on how a society views one's sexuality, joining a group that does not approve of one's preferred lifestyle that is meant to guide people away from that lifestyle is not how you handle it. Especially when it leads to situations like the one I described.
