imma be honest. This was a thing going about Reddit and other sm sites for a long time, plus this comment is like a year old so it maybe been corrected by now, but this isentirely true.

“Bless your heart” can be savage af, depending on when it’s said and how it’s said, but it’s honestly a very usual common southern/Appalachian thing to say. Cute baby? “Bless their little pure heart”. Someone passed and you’re comforting the bereaved? “Bless your heart Annie we know you did the best for your momma but she’s a peace now -hands over 6 lbs of baked goods”. Dumb ass cousin says something stupid in front of god and everyone and embarrassed themselves and family? Then, dryly, “bless your heart, but no. That’s not right”.

I don’t know where or why this has been picked up so often (iirc it was an ask Reddit thread that blew up the first time I saw it) but it absolutely can be and often is an expression of affection and kindness.

also: take w a grain of salt. “Southern” or “Appalachian” is like saying “native Americans” or “white people”- it’s not one cohesive culture- it can change by city/state/county/region wtf ever, but it’s not some viscous verbal kick to the groin ppl try to say it is.
