I think this is also what happens when mental health systems suck as much as they do. I can only speak to the US but its system is an absolute shit show. If you want to get in with a doctor it can take 6 months or more depending on their waitlist and psych wards are frankly not a ton better than what is depicted on TV and will not be of any help to 90% of people who get sent to one.

Self diagnosis and relying on the bastion of knowledge, Google, then seems like a pretty solid option to most people. Add in that therapists are not all good and quite a few would rather provide a safe space where they tell you "it wasn't good you did this but I understand why you did" and you end up with a weird cocktail of people who think their homebrew solutions to complex issues make sense when they were created by people too fucked up to see reason.

Furthermore, something I can't figure out is the way we address gender dysphoria compared to virtually all other forms. A person who sees a fat monster in the mirror when she weighs 100 lbs is not offered diet pills to alleviate the distress she is dying over, yet we offer insurance paid hormones? People who have body integrity disorder believe a limb on their body is not theirs and is preventing them from living a good life, yet when Doctor Robert Smith of the UK performed an informed consent removal of the offending limb he was denied further access to the hospital to perform surgeries.

If you want to see a psych doctor freak out tell them you are mutilating your junk with a razor. Seriously. They will try not to respond as that is the standard practice but they can't keep the little eye widening from happen that is a natural response. I genuinely don't get what makes gender dysphoria unique and it annoys me a lot.
