The Sinking City

even though it's a stupid trend to call trailers with no gameplay "gameplay trailers," i liked the whimsical feel of it

Kinda reminds me of BioShock, what with the title, the music, some of the aesthetics. Even the tentacles reminded me a little of the kinds of powers you'd get only with a more Lovecraftian twist to it.

I love this sort of thing, so I'm going to keep an eye on it.

There is also the official Call of Cthulhu game coming some time this year.

It's a good day to love Lovecraft. So many good games after having such a drought. The only really stand out Lovecraft focused game was Dark Corners of the Earth and sadly that game's last half is unplayable for a vast majority of people due to Windows updates. I hope someone patched it or found a work around.

I've been looking forward to playing this for a while. It's being developed by Frogwares, which developed at least the past three or four Sherlock Holmes games. No idea if anyone has played them, but the last two were especially impressive for a middleware studio. If anything, this studio knows how to get atmosphere correct. My only hope is they continue to work on the facial animations. The character models themselves in previous games are great, but they've always been very stiff.

Yup, that one is being made by Cyanide Studios, same people who made the Styx games (the stealth one featuring Styx the goblin) and presently releasing an episodic game called The Council. Again, another middleware team that understands how atmosphere works. Unlike Frogwares, who tends to make things as realistic (within reason considering their budget), Cyandie I've noticed has a very stylized, quasi-surreal style, so yeah, if they're doing Lovecraft, this should be a hoot.

Drama brewing, after playing keep-away with EPIC exclusivity The Sinking City is back on steam again at 60% ($16) off. ($12.80 at GreenmanGaming)

From what I've read Nacon (Publisher, formerly BigBen) took the devs (Frogware) to court in france, judge allowed Nacon to distribute the game again as they saw fit.

Here is where it gets interesting.

Nacon seemingly removed Frogware's Steam permissions, Frogware then used a steam feature to announce to everyone a message that boils down to "This game is an old version of our game, it has no DLC, Patches, Cloud saves, buy on Epic instead" at full price.

Now people are chimping out and dividing themselves into camps engaging in mental gymnastics to come out on top.

Now, I just checked the game's page and it looks like an interesting game. Looking at the game itself I do not see what would stop me from enjoying Nacon's version; Cloud saves are irrelevant to me, DLC is not a necessity to enjoy a game, and the only real gamble is the patches.

As for morality and ethics, both publisher and dev have an apparent history of trying to fuck eachother over, so I don't have any sympathy for either.

I dunno what patches Frogware is talking about, as the version that's on steam is from 2020 if one checks the exe file, which implies this version was least patched out in some places as this was supposed to be the version that went on steam anyway. The DLC for this game is pretty useless since it's just some outfits/OP weapons you can get super early. Also, apparently, you get can the Frogware version on Origin and some game site where it sells for 42 euros (an that's without the DLC for fuck sake) . Frankly, Frogwares were the ones who jumped to suck Epic's dick back in 2019 and used steam as means to pimp their game, finally, it seems they have a habit of picking publishers that may have some financial issues and then dragging their ass to court for one reason or another (like they did with the Spiders publisher)

It just keeps getting better, now Frogware posted a video calling out Nacon for basically pirating the game.

Nacon purchased an updated copy of TSC, decompiled it, removed mentions of Frogware and some distributors, then uploaded it to Steam.

Now here is an odd bonus, Frogware's version requires an internet connection check, why you ask? So they can peddle more of their games. Nacon removed the online check and the buttons/ads from their Steam version.

Can't say I dislike Nacon for trimming the fat.

Bottom line is they both seem like scumbags that deserve each other.

It just continues to be a clusterfuck; who really knows what's going on at this point.
The Steam page is currently burning, both in the reviews and forum.

I dunno, just pirate the game yourselves, ethics don't really matter here 'cause you're giving money to scammers.
Crackwatch has a good thread on the situation.

I mostly find it funny how everyone is trying to suck off Frogwares as these poor devs, when these numbnuts jumped to suck Epics dick back in 2019, but now I should apparently feel sorry for them and buy a 42 euro copy on some game sight, ya know what? Fuck em, I'll take the 16 euro copy an will enjoy it.

What, did they not settle their shit yet?
Either way the game is all around awful and you shouldn't buy it from anywhere.
Is it really awful? Put it to me this way, is it better or worse than that 2018 Call of Cthulhu game?

That 2018 Call of Cthulhu game, while not completely terrible (I beat it at least) is very far from great and I had my eye on The Sinking City as something hopefully better.

Why aren't there better HP Lovecraft games these days? I'd love someone to make a Call of Cthulhu game on the level of Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Honestly, Sinking City isnt bad as a detective game its pretty damn good, it has some great atmosphere and does have some neat moments. However, its combat isnt the best, the upgrade/RPG stuff is meh at most. Id say its def a tad better than the 2018 game, also if you want a CoC RPG I suggest Stygian Reign of the Old Gods for that.

I really didn't like the atmosphere. In my opinion Lovecraftian horror should be subtle, which this game really isn't considering you're immediately thrust in a feud between fish people and gorilla men, just walking out in the open as if it was nothing.
It's as if the game dev were constantly screaming into your hear "HEY GUYS, REMEMBER LOVECRAFT!? REMEMBER HOW CRAZY AND CREEPY HIS STORIES WERE!? HUH!? REMEMBER FISH PEOPLE!?!?!?"
The investigative side of things is kinda neat, everything else is super jank.
The devs autistically screeching from the rooftops are kinda amusing though.
