It originates in the "born that way" mentally that the progressive leaned into. It became a catch all box of deviants you couldn't criticize, and exists to protect said deviants from any kind of attempt to fix them, which, I mean, given the shotgun lobotomy approach of the 50s towards anyone a little off may have been warranted at some time. Basically anything to do with someone's junk and psychology.

Pedophiles are included in this too btw. This might piss off some people who don't want to go there, but if you are still trying to understand the "virtuous pedophile" thing, it's because the writers are still stuck in the mindset that the reason we don't beat gay people to death is because they didn't choose to be gay, ergo the same thing applies to diddlers who would never bang a kid.

It's also part of an explicit lobbyist tactic to make sure the two are linked. There is history between LGB and gender-noncomformity, but the money behind some of this knows it's useful to make the two the same thing.
