I don't know what parts of the scripture you aknowledge as canonical but I read about it in Acts 9:1-19. Paul being personally chosen by Christ.

I see no contradiction.
James means "works" as "deeds the person commits", so "Don't be like Pharisees, declaring fait by words but not acting on it".
Paul means "works of law" - so "You don't need great at theology to be a good believer".
Everything in this place between Judaism and Christianity is strange cultish stuff that contradicts both religions.

You can read about this in the writings of James, including the Ascents of James. The Assembly in Jerusalem was left under the direction of James and then Polycarp.
If you trace the letters of Polycarp, you will begin to see the division between the assembly in Jerusalem and Paul's followers. James' assembly kept Passover on the 14th of Nissan, Paul's followers did not. James taught John and then Polycarp. Paul's followers in Rome
Other scholars have traced this division as well. You have to search it out.
