There's a lot of difference.

Ten hits a nation the size of Russia or the US could handle. It would be extremely damaging, kill millions, but still, the nation could fight and possibly win the war anyway.

Plus, they'd need to hold some of those nukes back to handle the war itself, because it would be no holds barred after that.

Then, you have the different levels of nuclear weapons, from Pee-Wee tac-nukes to the big honking ICBM MIRV weapons to wipe out entire cities with multiple nuclear weapon hits. Then you've battlefield level nuclear weapons (like the W series artillery shells in the US arsenal)

A thousand, not so much.

Iran or even China having ten nukes (although LOL at Chinese construction on ICBM's) is something we can not only take on the chin, but strike back from and follow up with massive land, air, and sea attacks. A nuclear parity is FAR FAR more than ICBM's, and the big threat is hypersonic missiles with tactical warheads to offset our Pacific Fleet advantage. The only way to stop 1st and 3rd Armor Divisions would be a tactical nukes if they went full faceroll and China fucking knows it. Then you'd want the high atmosphere detonations over Omaha in the 800W EMP range to disrupt things. Oh, let's not forget you'd need to hit Hawaii, Guam, and the Phillipines too to make sure you knock out ALL of our naval power. Again, tactical weapons for the latter. ICBM for the former, probably with an enhanced jacketing to make sure you can pump the EMP up high enough.

So yeah, the stockpiles DO make a difference.

The main concern is allowing China to have a blue water navy which leads to them controlling the South China Sea.

This causes a problem with all of our diplomatic influence over the pacific. Many countries do not want China to have naval control over that region.

Combined with China's belt/road initative: Hypothetically, China could have a stranglehold over trade infustracture with a navy to back it up.

They're not even close to this right now, but military spending is built on projections. So, the military has to start to increase naval projection now. They have to filter funding to meet the potential threat in the future.

Granted, its all convient to keep the military industrial complex going. But, is it rooted in some sort of reality? Potentially.

I do think China should be viewed as an adversary...

A very close family member of mine is suffering from Alzheimer's (not for much longer, thankfully - she's in hospice right now), and let me tell you - Alzheimer's is NOT PRETTY. Talking to people who aren't there, spontaneously crying for no reason, staying up all night and sleeping all day, urinating on the floor - shit sucked, hard. She's actually older than Creepy Joe, too, by about 2 years. Not 20 years ago, she was a perfectly normal, if a bit feisty, old lady. Seeing her decline like that was pretty devastating for us, my grandmother especially. The fact that the LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD not only clearly exhibits some of the same symptoms, but is paraded around as if nothing were wrong with him at all, sickens me to my very core, and I hope his puppet masters rot in the deepest bowels of Hell when they kick the bucket.
