Granted, its all convient to keep the military industrial complex going. But, is it rooted in some sort of reality? Potentially.

The M-I Complex we have is absolutely necessary. One can argue about bloat, waste, and pork, and be absolutely correct, but that doesn't change the fact it is absolutely vital. Eisenhower, a man around for three wars (WW1, WW2, Korea) was forced to admit that prior American wartime mass armament and mobilization was a terrible idea in the era of modern warfare. You can teach a guy to reload and fire a musket with ease and do all that. But drive a tank? Fix jet engines? Not die horribly as an infantryman in an era of automatic weapons? The USA's mobilization was a disaster for the first few years of WW2, and the post-war demobilization had absolutely wrecked our preparedness when Korea happened. The shit we had all ready to leap off the drawing boards made German wunderwaffe look like a joke (the M20 Super Bazooka we had ready right at the end of WW2 made the Panzerschreck look like a Roman Candle, for example), and had we properly continued that R&D and production similar to how the Russians did post-war, Korea never would have happened.

Dunno but it is a good question.

It definitely strikes me as a bad result and the primary peril of lowering the bar of "outrage" to the floor. There are probably a few landowners on the border that have already been vilified, possibly by the national mainstream press. There are going to be people that say "fuck it" and take matters into their own hands since nothing they do is ever deemed acceptable by the outrage mob.

I'm half ignorant of the subject, but this seems pretty fucking dumb to me. Doesn't the IRS (the fucking federal government) have Trump's tax returns already? What is it they have such a hard on over finding? I'm outta coffee and super foggy, so I'm probably just retarded rn.

It's a fishing expedition. They've been planning on it for years. Worst case scenario, they get Trump's tax returns, find nothing they can attack him legally over, and selectively leak them in order to harm him, a repeat of the "zomg he went BANKRUPT" crap that stupid people were chanting at him the entire time. Best case scenario, they find something that's technically legal but shady enough that they can twist it into a violation of New York State law and keep him in the legal system for the next 10-20 years, using that against him if he runs.

Except Xi Jingping doesm't seem like the type that's power hungry. If Hong Kong is any indication, he only drops the hammer when he's confident he's going to win. The IRS has no doubt gone over Trump's tax returns with an electron microscope. His accounts have presumably filed everything correctly, or corrected any errors that were identified. So this isn't about enforcing the tax code. It's primarily a display of dominance and control. "You didn't want this exposed? I will expose it to everyone. We can infringe on your privacy any time we like." Once the tax returns are out there, they are grist for the left wing outrage mill. Doesn't matter if there's anything interesting, they will go on for weeks about how Trump "doesn't pay taxes" or "owns foreign property, "etc.
