The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

She doesn't want therapy or any help. She wants attention. The whole "they never asked me if I was ok" shtick was only to make them look bad. Because, of course, the Queen should have been more focused on her grandchild's wife's mental health than UK political issues.

You know who she should have gone to? Her husband. That's it. If I'm feeling like shit, I don't demand my whole inlaws intervene. I talk to husband. If we realise this is something the whole family should be involved, so be it. But it wasn't the case.

Antidepressants are not that expensive and I don't know if Meghan would have had access to the NHS or not. But it would look kind of shitty if she was being sent off to a fancy health spa to recover on taxpayers dime, or was getting therapy when it's a little tough to actually get that for a depression diagnosis (Most GP's will just direct you to self-care online tutorials) .

It's hard to find one that isn't technically biased towards Harry and Meghan. I think HG Tudor's series on Meghan's narcissistic behaviour is interesting if your wondering why it raises red flags for people, Mind there's like 20 parts at this point.

Tho if you want video on just the rift, someone uploaded the ABC documentary about it. Just be aware it's mostly in the "everyone is just so mean to her!" camp.

Given the Royal Family's conservatism, and the traditional manner in which powerful families have dealt with troublesome women, this was probably not a good idea. There are some very interesting theories about Victoria, her Royal Physician, and the Freemasons, and the things they did to keep Prince Albert Victor out of trouble with the ladies.

Okay, so From Hell is complete fiction, but it wasn't that long ago that you could send your outspoken daughter to a sanitarium to get her brains scrambled with an icepick. Happened to JFK's sister. ECT is a great treatment for severe depression, and if an accident were to occur, I imagine it would have a similar effect.

I agree, she did NO research, or most likely, didn't give a damn. She had no intention of staying in England, so couldn't be bothered to learn anything about the country.

The tabloid montage used a bunch of newspaper and magazine headlines to portray the press as out to get Meghan but, as shown in the DM article, they were misleading, used out of context, or now DM is claiming actually doctored.

Oprah’s production company Harpo is getting heat for this too. They even issued a statement, “Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, shared in the interview their personal story. We stand by the broadcast in its entirety.”

Sounds like Harpo is trying to cover their ass by making it “their personal story” rather than claiming truth and accuracy.
