It didn't so much get "shut down" as it never really got going. Funnily enough, even trannies aren't crazy enough to get Brazen Bulled in a shipping container 50 miles from the nearest fresh water. On that particular board, just eyeballing and I am not an electrical engineer either but if that is indeed a diode that blew, it would have gotten a high voltage going the "wrong" direction into the circuit. I can't tell if it's protecting components from the power supply (windmill, solar panels, generator, etc.) or from the batteries.

As far as what would cause that to happen, I guess it could have been lightning. If that's the case they're lucky that that component took the hit instead of it making it any further upstream (like into their batteries).

They could have also hooked something up backwards but you would probably have to really try to get it to blow like that (like hooking 10 batteries up in series instead of parallel and then plugging them in backwards).

I don’t know about alpacas but one of the problems with running sheep and goats together is the fact that goats need much higher trace amounts of copper in their diets which will kill sheep.

If I recall correctly the problem with the PV system was in the wiring and inverter. As to the batteries in the basement. I work in an industry where we have a room full of wet cell batteries for emergency backup to some critical valve systems. Those things need to be checked regularly and topped off or replaced as needed. This is not like your car battery that you install and forget about.

Some quick research shows that camelids (alpacas) require a higher lever of copper then sheep. If they are feeding them the same mineral blocks they are in for nasty surprises as the copper will build up in the sheep’s liver to the point of death.

I'd question whether they even realize that they are supposed to be feeding the animals minerals at all, at least when they moved in (although it wouldn't surprise me if the free hay person helped them get some minerals too, I'm guessing someone in the area cares about the animals but it's not any of the troons). Hopefully they get some selenium supplements; most soils west of the Rocky Mountains are selenium-poor. Selenium deficiency in sheep gets you white muscle disease, where the sheep slowly loses strength, wastes away, and dies. The meat's unsalvageable, too. I don't know what it gets you in alpacas, but I guarantee that it is nothing good. White muscle disease tends to strike in pregnancy, when the needs of the developing lamb overtax the ewe's deficient selenium supplies, and results in prolonged, difficult lambing that the lamb often doesn't survive. Surviving lambs have white muscle disease themselves, and have obvious trouble standing and weak little baas. Without the ability to stand or suckle vigorously, they are likely to die quickly of hypothermia if not cared for properly (newborn lambs rely on burning glucose to keep their body temperature up and will die of hypothermia before they can starve to death).

One of the things that insufferable trans communities rely on in cities is shuffling through people and places like mad. But you don't have the same luxury in a rural community. Well they are nice pets (I know someone with them) but yes they aren't much use as farm animals, you get some nice wool but that is about it.

It's not that difficult, most farm suppliers will have specialist feed with the required mineral content. But you are right about lambing, most competent farmers have a shed with IR lamps and the like to ensure it is warm and safe for the lamb and the ewe. I did the young farmers (it was the norm for the kids in my village) and it was a lot of work to keep them safe. You had predators (foxes etc.), they would just die if someone's dog came too close to them. You also have to ultrasound all the mothers incase any are carrying twins (or more) since her mineral needs skyrocket (sheep aren't really meant to have more than one) .
