There had been a couple other weebs before that. Most notably Yasuke, the literal Afro Samurai, who came to Japan 21 years before Adams.
Also, it's a tiny bit more complex than "hated the Portuguese and Cathlics", since this was during the struggle to become independent from foreign powers as well as a massive religious dispute that would grow into the 30 Years War in Europe later on.
Catholic traders had a monopoly over trade in Asia and they made mad cash off of trading Chinese silk for Japanese silver and vice versa with a substantial mark-up both ways.
At this point, the Japanese were already very paranoid about Christians, Adams just pointed out to the Emperor/Daimyo that (technically) they were subordinates of Portugal based on a contract the Portuguese had with Spain... there was also an instance of some Spaniard (I believe) accidentally spilling the beans about how they had used Christian missionaries to get a foothold in other nations before sending soldiers and starting a war to take over the power.

I can highly recommend James Clavell's book "Shogun", it's a fictionalized version based William Adam's life and it's fucking amazing. There's also a movie featuring Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune and John Rhys-Davies.
