Howdy! Long time lurker, first time poster.
Forgive the lateness of my reply and if I'm rehashing old comments, but I wanted to add my 0.02.
I have finally made it through all 173 pages of this after reading it on and off for the past few months and all I have to say is, yikes. I knew he was a colossal jerk, a shitty boss, a bully and a pop culture elitist/snob, but the news of him, the buzzfeed article and the various stories about him are mortifying.
I have seen the HHJJ docu twice and am on the fence about it. It was informative and interesting but also clearly biased and incomplete at times (I agree it would have worked better as a multipart docuseries). Also, for those (understandably) upset about the overuse of John versus the lack of everyone else, after seeing it the second time, I have to speculate if it was done intentionally by the subjects themselves instead of (just) poor and biased editing. I am specifically talking about the lack of input from Lynne Naylor and Billy West. Obviously, the show and John himself must bring up some awful memories for them, in spite of their major contributions (particularly her; learning of her being a victim of his violence is heartbreaking. I'm glad she found true love in Chris (RIP). This would also explain why the actual reason she left Spumco/R&S was left ambiguous), so I can understand why they weren't too interested with being interviewed at great length, if that was the case. Also, I would have much preferred to hear from the real Anthony instead of that unnecessary and quasi-creepy fanboy, especially given how poorly placed his interview in the docu was. For shame!
Plus, while some like to point out the treatment of John's late father towards him as the reason why he is what he is...yeah, no. Even if his Dad was the world's biggest jerk or the "Dad the veteran" stereotype, it doesn't excuse preying on underage girls or making everyone else around you, particularly those that either loved him or had the potential of trying to befriend him, suffer (save for sycophants, of course). Nothing in his past, real, imagined, embellished or speculated on, justifies manipulating one of his victims into having an abortion and then getting mad at her for dare being sad about it or sending another one disturbing garbage like that "package boy" picture (*shudder*). Plus, not to play misery poker here, but Billy's own father, from what I could gather, was way, WAY worse than John's to the point of trying to kill him multiple times in his childhood and he isn't an asshole who blames the world for his problems. So fuck that shit.
Also, I know it was a few pages back, but yeah, I wouldn't mind a side by side comparison shot of the "evolution" of John's face. "Never the same face twice", indeed. Lol
