Shows you don't want to come back - Let a good thing rest

It's a well-worn cliché at this point that the entertainment industry is out of ideas which is why we're currently experiencing an endless slew of remakes, reboots and revivals of classic films and shows. I see loads of articles about shows people want to see come back, but I almost never see any articles about shows that shouldn't come back and should just be left alone for whatever reason (the story's over, it would ruin a good thing, etc). I get that there's no excitement in saying "It's over, move on", but most of the time when a show's brought back, the reaction usually ranges from "meh" to "Oh god, what did you do?", so I'm often left wondering what's the point.

Anyway, here's some shows I don't want to see come back:

Farscape - I've heard rumblings that some sort of revival may be in the works or possibly a film, but I don't want that to happen. Peacekeeper Wars may have been rushed, but it finished the story off well enough. I don't know where they'd take the story now, and season 4 was very rough around the edges so I don't see much value in digging this one up.

Babylon 5 - Similar story to above. The story's finished, most of the cast are now dead and I don't think there's anything more to be gained from revisting this universe.

Fawlty Towers - Thankfully there's almost no chance of this happening. John Cleese has wisely said he'll never do it because expectations would be impossible to meet, but I haven't ruled out the BBC digging up its corpse and raping it once he's passed away. You have twelve episodes of perfect comedy which combined are more funny than most shows that run for over 100 episodes. Why spoil it now?

The Inbetweeners - This one kind of already overstayed its welcome with the second film. It should've ended after the first film which ended things perfectly, whereas the second film ended on a downer. The show wouldn't work the same way these days given the current political climate and a sanitised version would be downright insulting.

Futurama - I don't think Futurama should've been uncancelled in the first place. The movies never rose above okay for me and "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" was a perfect ending. The quality of the writing noticeably dropped when the series came back and I can't stomach another revival. Now that Matt's distracted with Disenchantment I don't know if it will happen, but he was definitely talking about it.

So what are some shows you don't want to see necromanced for the current year?

Firefly. Apparently Disney is working on doing a family friendly reboot for Disney+. Even leaving aside the fact Joss Whedon is in the middle of being #cancelled right now, this is a terrible idea. A big part of what made Firefly work as a story was the morally gray (sometimes very dark gray) behavior of its main characters. Turning it into a clean cut family comedy show would be entirely missing the point.

Red Dwarf. Should have ended with the season 6 cliffhanger. The new few seasons were utterly awful, never have I seen a show fall in quality so quickly. It did improve slightly later on, but still well past its prime and needs to be put out to pasture.
I literally struggle to watch Red Dwarf when the half of the main characters are just plain annoying and unsympathetic

Anything ever made that was good would be 100% gayer and worse if made today because the Progress we have means everything must get increasingly gayer and worse over time. If they made the Sopranos today Tony Soprano would be a closeted tranny bitching to Melfi about not being able to wear frilly skirts because of the widespread problematic transphobia in the Cosa Nostra

While Futurama had some absolutely awful ones in its return, we at least got Meanwhile. Trying to bring it back a third (fourth?) time would be a horrible, horrible idea no matter who’s attached.

Gravity Falls got out right before the creator went full TDS. Trying to bring it back would only go bad at this point.

On a related note, the new Amazon adaptation of the Invincible comic series has apparently threw in a bunch of very much unneeded “diversity” along race and sexuality lines.

However, I at least saw IGN bitching about how none of it really changed the actual characterization itself in any way, so I’m cautiously… like, not optimistic, more “hey, maybe we’ll see even more sites like this get really pissed when these newly diverse characters still play the same roles”.

Blackadder. They keep talking about reviving it, but most of the cast are in their 60s and 70s if not deceased. They did a one-off for the Millennium and frankly it was shit.

I have mixed feelings about Red Dwarf. There have been some great episodes post-revival, but there have also been some stinkers (Timewave comes to mind). And again, the cast are getting on a bit - Lister playing juvenile pranks and pining over Kochanski looks a bit sad in a guy nearing 60.

I'm trying to think of something I like that hasn't already gotten a disappointing or transformative reboot and I can't come up with anything.

Ooh. I know. 3-2-1 Contact's The Bloodhound Gang. The original was already pretty diverse, but I cringe to see what a mess they'd make of it now.
