🐱 Magic School Bus Fans Are Reflecting On The Reboot, And They’re Especially Mad About Miss Frizzle

CatParty

The original Magic School Bus became a kids cult classic for most of us '90s kids and babies out there. When the trailer for a Magic School Busreboot graced our screens three years ago, the internet collectively freaked out – but not exactly in a good way. Fans are now re-experiencing those mad feelings about the reboot, especially when it comes to Netflix's handling of the new Miss Frizzle.
Some might be wondering what good reason could there be that the new Magic School Bus, voice led by SNL actress Kate McKinnon and with theme music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is trending on Twitter again. Isn’t this old news? Well, I should sit all those Boomers and Gen Zers down and explain that the original show introduced a generation of kids to the world of science like never before. With this, it's material that any creative should tread lightly with in regard to a reboot. What is dead will never die, to quote Game of Thrones, and the diehard fans still have gripes with the reboot's animation and characters.
The biggest faux pas for fans regarding Netflix's Magic School Bus Rides Again series is the animation redesign. Instead of the hand drawn and lively animation from the original, the reboot opts for a sleek computer generated animation. Fans on Twitter are arguing that the reboot could have made some changes for the better:
Seeing y'all dunk on "Ms. Frizzle" just reminds me of how much potential the Magic School Bus reboot had. It was serviceable in every aspect except the visuals, which killed its appeal on arrival. It depresses me bc it could've been the ONE, but they *had* to oversimplify it.. :/ pic.twitter.com/Ai4ttfo2pR

In other words, for a number of fans, the new-age animation of the reboot took away the aesthetic nostalgia associated with the original. As one Twitter user put it:
the magic school bus reboot just continuously reminds me how much i hate modern animation and the corporate art style. LOOK WHAT THEY DID TO MS. FRIZZLE pic.twitter.com/eromS2B32l

As seen in the above tweet, numerous fans seem to be mistaking Miss Frizzle with the new lead, her sister Fiona Frizzle. That’s right – Miss Frizzle isn’t the lead of the reboot. This is disappointing to some because Miss Frizzle was the quirky heart and soul of the show. She has even become somewhat of a queer icon of late for her style alone, but many fans are claiming that the reboot has erroneously revised her as a straight woman:
Just saw Magic School Bus reboot episode 1, im not going to watch more episodes of this. They replaced Mrs. Frizzle with her little sister while Mrs. Frizzle is now "retired" for me. The designs look so bad and this show makes me want to cringe.

Another huge reason fans are mad at the Magic School Bus reboot (again) is because Miss Frizzle’s students appear to be “white-washed.” Kids who were dark-skinned in the original show are now visibly lighter – and that's been frowned upon given that the entertainment industry has been aiming for more diversity and inclusivity. See this fan’s reaction:
Handling nostalgic properties can be tricky and, in the era of reboot announcements, this is something many studios are dealing with. Shows like The Magic School Bus are tied to countless childhoods, so audiences are going to be very particular when it comes to re-imaginings. In fairness, creatives ideally want to satisfy all viewers but, when reviving something as beloved as this show, it's likely that there will be a mixture of responses. One would hope that a reboot can strike a balance that allows it to appeal to viewers of all generations.

I blame Carlos for this.

This computer generated bullshit is cheaper than paying people to hand draw everything.
which is especially sad considering animators for other classic kids shows have historically made only slightly more money than the Nike sweatshops sewing Jordans together.

"Well, I should sit all those Boomers and Gen Zers down and explain that the original show introduced a generation of kids to the world of science like never before."

Oh my god STOP.

I had to stop, this just took me back to like 2009-2011 internet culture shit where people were spamming the shit out of Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson, and even shit like Alton Brown because they "brought science into the kitchen" because EVERYBODY FUCKING LOVES SCIENCE (when it involves getting stoned and watching documentaries).

Ms Frizzle was never a rug muncher.
Yeah now that theyre trying to say she was supposed to be gay, Im lookng back and like "I think the intent was to be kind of a wild, crazy energetic teacher, maybe like that iconic Einstein photo where hes got his tongue out and wild hair, or like shes stuck her finger in a socket and had the cartoon electricity fried hair."

Weirdly they took away Ms Frizzle's frizzled hair.

....it's not just nostalgia, I never watched the original this just looks soulless.
The original had that kinda weird, grainy PBS, after-elementary-school PBS art style kinda like Arthur.

Since when is Ms. Fizzle gay? Homo headcanon?

It's entirely because Ms. Frizzle's original voice actress is a lesbian.

IIRC, there were a few episodes that implied Ms. Frizzle was either married or had a boyfriend. But it's been years since I saw the old show and I can't be half-assed to rewatch the series again.

For fuck's sake, even George Takei insists that Sulu is straight and that his own orientation shouldn't reflect that of the character he played.

If Lily Tomlin can even be half-assed to care about some dumb kids show she did in the 90's, I'm pretty sure she'd say the same thing.

It's the art style. It's the same "safe" shit you see all the fucking time. Not on the same level as cal-arts, but still bad.

I find it funny they made the teacher attractive though. You'd think they would keep the old woman look, but no... it's literally Ariel from the Little Mermaid all grown up.

Gonna echo the sentiment that I'm just glad Ms. Frizzle didn't just get blackwashed and they didn't go full "CalArts"

The awful 2004 era flash cartoon look isn't good, but it's still slightly better than the intentionally ugly CalArts bean mouth style. Slightly.

The original had a spineless, joyless ginger with asthma who hated adventure and wanted to sit in school normally. They managed to make that character not completely unlikable. Pretty good writing imo.

Not only that, but the spineless joyless ginger was also a Jew.

I can't help being suspicious about this. Original Miss Frizzle had that Talia Lavin hair going on, although she could just be a hippie I guess. Are they really mad about the removal of the ethnic characteristics of the children, or the teacher?

That being said, I give this only about 10% confidence as the cause for this uproar. The new thing looks shit.

She was voiced by Lily Tomlin in the original cartoon which makes the character also a lesbian to these idiots.
That excuse is bs. There is no way these people were that much aware that the character had a voice actress, let's not even talk about her sexual orientation. Kids don't care about those things. And even if they did, I doubt they would recognize her. Her movies weren't exactly for children.
