This is one of the saddest threads. Lavery took a troubled but vibrant young woman and destroyed her. Truly a detestable specimen, and clearly an abuser. I think people will realize it eventually, I sense a "call-out" twitter thread in the future.

I was going back through Mallory's Instagram, and it looks like her and Joe came "out" at the same time, while I always thought Joe had a head start. Mallory clearly looked butch and referred to herself humorously as a "boy" in a lot of her photos, but her and Joe always looked like their birth sex and then suddenly Mallory starts going by Daniel and doing Joe's makeup for him while he grows his hair out. I'd be interested if someone has more on the timeline. All I remember is Joe said her "William Shatner is a lesbian" post was proof she was trans and that's what triggered her.

If I remember correctly, in the very next paragraph Joe describes stepping on to the campus of Sarah Lawrence College and how all the students were INSANE with JINGOISTIC GLEE that the Iraq invasion had begun. The first time I came across Mallory's writing was in this 2012 Gawker essay about leaving her evangelical upbringing. Being raised fundie, I found it extremely relatable & began loosely following her writing. This was, of course, well before all the family drama and very pre-Joe. Sometime shortly after this piece got some attention, IIRC, she relocated to the Hairpin.
I don't know if this is where she and Nicole Cliffe connected, but they both wrote there before starting the Toast. I didn't pay too much more attention until reading the big "I'm transitioning" post years later. In her writing she'd always seemed like an incredibly intelligent, extremely quirky, exvangelical, possible-lesbian (there were occasional allusions to the latter), so the Cut interview with Salon's Heather Havrilesky was a bit jarring. Later Mallory discussed her double mastectomy in a fairly casual way, almost like she was initially just trying on a new outfit to see if it fit.
I didn't know anything about her having joined the Lavery AGP Circus during any of this, and after reading this thread (especially the OP) all I can say is what a tragedy. She was a talented writer (though based on her Twitter posts alone, seems to have adopted a really mean asshole tone, in contrast to what I remember before). The sadistic Lavery post about his plan to destroy her is nuts. It comes across like she was vulnerable but talented, striking out on her own after a sheltered upbringing, and got sucked into not just a Bay Area scene, but what sounds like a frankly abusive relationship w/ a cruel narcissist who thinks blasting edgelord takes wrapped in academic hyperbabble & poly négligée is as impressive to the rest of the world as it looks to him in the mirror.

Joe's seething hatred of Christianity is funny -- he always gets a huge dig in when talking about Mallory's family and acts like he helped guide her out of it somehow. I mean, I don't think she was a Christian even when she found out about the pedophilia, and it makes sense that she would feel a lot of anger about it, but Joe was gleeful he had a pedophile = Christian angle he could wave around. He thinks he liberated her from her sex repulsion.

Happy traniversary to me! I took this picture one year ago today, in the pharmacy area of the CVS next to my old apartment in Oakland, while the pharmacists were prepping my first doses of estradiol and spironolactone. I was walking with a cane that day because I was in the middle of a gout attack. Two relatively important things had happened in the recent past. The first was that, about a month prior, I had begun to sense that the best friend on whom I had a titanic, half-acknowledged crush, might feel - or at least have felt, at some point - something similar. And more pressingly: an odd moment at the Lyon Martin clinic. I had gone in to discuss getting horms, but had felt mostly quite sulky and dutiful about the prospect; a feeling that I was ruling something out, rather than starting something new. Then, as the nurse practitioner laid out the consequences for my ability to produce biological children, and offered to revisit the matter after I had had the opportunity to freeze some sperm, I felt a renewed sense of momentum. I knew that, to my honest surprise, starting the hormones was both more important and more urgent than having children in that way. At which point I knew I was going to start then and there.

I remember popping the pills while in the car headed back to Danny’s house, and wondering whether they would have an immediate effect - the first new meds I had taken since getting sober. I had at that point (and still now, in some ways) done my best not to read very much about other people’s experiences of hormones, because I worried that I would produce expectations for myself, which would distort the experience I was going to have - twist it into either an instantiation or a contradiction of what I thought “everyone else” was experiencing. The disidentification was, and remains, intense - the feeling that, on the one hand, I barely deserved to transition, but on the other that I was the *only* person who had ever deserved to. As I read more, and spoke more with other trans women, I learned that these feelings themselves were the norm rather than the exception.
You can tell yourself that drugs *hit* you as soon as you take them, but probably you are simply vibing on the consequences of the decision itself. You can drive over to your best friend’s house, loving him warmly and silently, and talk about sex and friendship, as you often do - offhandedly aware of a rather onerous, if still also oneiric, accountability. You can go to hear @jasminepics read from her new book at a bookstore on College Avenue and feel, for once, delight in the excellence of others. But it probably won’t be until a few days later that you’ll be dancing around your apartment, lazily and opportunistically cleaning things, and listening to “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” while a fucking oil diffuser humps a little slick of lemongrass grease into the atmosphere, that you’ll be sure that it has finally landed on and in you. (Yes, humps not pumps - have you *heard* them?) Also also also, important update: I still have absolutely no idea what any of this means!!!

The photographer says (in the caption) that Joe wanted to look like an "edgy, dykey MILF." Ugh.
He doesn't look bad at all in that picture with the bleached blond hair and aviators. Trooning out is always going to make a guy look disgusting, but Joe has really deteriorated. Only three years later, his face flab has increased by a factor of ten.

I truly can't believe he's only three years into it. Both him and Mallory talk about nothing but Being Trans, and it's crazy that three years ago, it hadn't crossed their minds.
The mastectomy article is particularly manic for her, trying too hard to be convincing and nonchalant at the same time. "academic hyperbabble" is SO ON POINT.
Joe wouldn't be where he is at all without Mallory. Mallory was already an internet hit before, but there's no way anyone would know about Joe without his association with her AND the trooning. He's resentful that she had a pre-built fanbase that he could not control or sever her from, so he wrote that post to demean her and her internet fame and her intelligence, so much less Learned than his.

Scrolling and scrolling til suddenly the account was locked as I was reading the drivel. Joe seems to be having some kind of meltdown. His trolling adventure with his sock puppet account was a daylong affair, and now yet again he's spent the whole day sending dozens and dozens of unhinged tweets.
I'm going to break this into two separate posts because it's so long.
PART 1: JOE BECOMES A "SUBSTACK PRO"
People are pissed that the blogging platform Substack has not banned Glinner, but instead continues to allow him to use the platform for his twansphobic screeds. Wokesters are voluntarily leaving the platform in protest, and troons are haranguing others to follow suit. See @Kirkorov's informative post in the Tranny Sideshows thread for more details.
In solidarity with his trans* sisters, and to protest the violent rhetoric of Glinner, Joe too has decided to leave Substack. Oh wait, no he didn't! He has instead chosen this moment to level up his association with Substack and get on the payroll as a "Substack Pro." Troons are throwing shade at this shockingly self-serving move. Joe has absolutely no response.
His followers are sad and disappointed too. Joe again has no response. He decides to blame an "allergic reaction" for his inability to offer an explanation for his behavior. Strangely, this debilitating allergic reaction did not prevent him from tweeting nonstop for several more hours.
Lavery finally comes up with something! It's OK for him to take money from the "bigot factory" Substack because it wouldn't be "politically efficacious" for him to turn it down and also, um, uhh, there's a war criminal working at UC Berkeley! Makes perfect sense?
