My talks are not technical. The topics of free software, copyright vs community, and digital inclusion deal with ethical/political issues that concern all users of computers. The topics of GPL version 3 and software patents are mainly of of interest to people that work with software.

You obviously never tried running a .net application under Linux.
Seriously, it's easier running a classic Win32 program under a non-Windows platform than fucking .net.

They rely on Windows libraries that are NOT cross-platform - any .net application that does more than print out "hello word" to the console will NOT run under Linux.
If you want a .net application to be actually cross-platform you need to target mono with GTK# etc. instead of using the Microsoft environment. Almost no software does this.

That is not true under .NET Core. Yes, for a native UI you would have to use GTK or some kind of Qt wrapper but that's true for literally every native UI in Linux.

.NET Core allows direct OS + architecture targeting and you can dig through the underlying C/C++ if you want.

I haven't looked into the inner workings of FSF so I can't speak on if he should step down or not. I just think its cruel to take (in his own words) the only child away from an almost 70 year old man. He dedicated his life to the cause and probably hasn't much going on besides open sauce shilling. He loses a lot of sympathy for defending pedophilia, but that stuff has been out there for 15 years so any reputational damage to the projects he's involved in has already been done. On the other hand, he is a left wing politisperg so he should be aware of the consequences of committing thought crimes™. To be fair, he's also a supremely autistic man who probably can't even conceptualize how others might react to him putting his most degenerate thoughts out for the world to read. There has always been a line between the free software movement and commercial tech. I grew up in the Bay Area and tech was only mysterious if you had no curiosity about it. People forget early on tech/computing was this proprietary thing jealously guarded by companies like IBM and Xerox and not easily accessed without years of training. Computers were mainframes that required making punch cards to execute a function. When microprocessors became a thing and computers became smaller they also became cheaper and more accessible; thus, in the hippy and communal Bay Area there was always a push to make software free. Stallman is from that era and background (although he's not from the Bay Area). Gates and Jobs didn't create hardware and software, they were just businessmen that sold computers. Stallman created a computer program that's still used today and made it free.

I'm glad he's around and yeah he's a weirdo but without Stallman making free software his raison d'etre we'd all be slaving away on the Microsoft Windows SUXBALLZ XP 2021.14 Plebe Edition and paying $9.99 a month for Adobe Flash to rape our hardware on the regular while every phone would be a Windows nightmare. I'm only sorry he didn't have a Sancho Panza to team up with to advocate for free (as in free from proprietary standards and NSA spyware) hardware because it's slowly throttling the free software movement by making it harder to run a FOSS OS or programs. That's the only thing I fault him for, not seeing the effect proprietary hardware has on software and by extension, computing. Steve Jobs company NeXT (which later was bought by Apple and became the tech behind the Mac and iPhone) used the GNU tools extensively. The Objective-C compiler until the 2010s was GCC. Without Richard Stallman there would be no modern Apple.

There's a funny story were Steve Jobs tried to talk with Stallman in the early 90s, but I can't find a source.
