One big problem in Lindsay's circles is the universal truth: Victimhood has an expiration date. Newer, sexier professional victims will emerge and the current ones will gradually fade from the public perception unless they manage to somehow hold onto the spotlight. In all of her recent panels she's on, she whines about her harassment, and how exhausting it is to deal with the fandom that ostensibly is paying her bills.

Sooooo the Twitter Thing

I'm posting this here because I feel like if I owe anyone an explanation it's you guys, so with regard to the Twitter thing - needless to say there is a lot of projection and assumption of why I did decide to delete it, but at the end of the day I took this whole debacle as a sign that I really need to rethink my "career," such as it were, because clearly this is not working.

Twitter and social media in general have become such an incredible source of toxicity, for culture in general and for me in particular. It was making me so unhappy, which is part of why I had been getting increasingly snippy and defensive in ways that were unnecessary and unprofessional. The people who are saying that this is the result of carelessness are right--I was careless.

As for the question of "why now", it wasn't that this controversy was the worst ever, it honestly was just the last straw, and not just for Twitter. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, how I should engage with content or if I should continue making it at all. So I'm taking some time away from Internet, try to detox from it, and then we'll see what the state of things will be going forward.

As for an actual statement, I'm not making one now. I'm going to take some time to consider how to respond, because I think it will take some time to figure out what I want to say and how to say it. For the people who've sent messages of support I appreciate it, and I do apologize for any hurt or stress this may have caused. I don't feel awesome about it.

I think part of the reason SJW types love going after their own champions is because they hate people who are more successful than them.

It's fine early on, but once it starts becoming clear that these people are making bank and rising up in the world off of their backs, they start to get resentful.

I find it strange that the same "trust the science" and "abortion isn't murder because God isn't real" crowd are the primary consumers of yoga, vaguely Eastern spiritualism (so long as it doesn't get in the way of whatever vapid thing they're trying to bully people into at any given time), $6 wheatgrass shots, witchcraft, and shit like crystal healing and naturopathy. It's the same crowd that saw that "What the Bleep Do We Know?" nonsense-fest and thought it made them enlightened.

It's like there's an entire generation of women out there living with absolutely zero intention or purpose, blandly picking up on whatever they last saw on Netflix. Is it a search for some sort of meaning? And yeah, there's men in that same boat, but it seems to be much more common with women. Am I off base here? I feel like these are usually the same people: lefty-by-default, mostly white women in their mid-20s — 30s, but maybe the vaguely spiritualist and the "shout your abortion" crowd are actually two different demographics...

There is absolutely no reason to be using a platform that artificially retards your ability to communicate. There's NOTHING functional about it. There is no argument for their existence. They are vehicles for brain washing, pure and simple.

The problem with our current state of the web is that there is too much information and things going on in the world for everyone to keep track of what's happening. People's attention is constantly being pulled in millions of directions by a metric fuckload of content that nobody has the time or energy to go through. The fact of the matter is most people like to be superficially engaged in the world around them, but are not able or willing to put the time and energy to immerse themselves meaningfully in a topic or trend. Because of this, information on the internet is almost always most efficiently communicated to others in a spoonfed, simplistic manner. The less work the audience has to do to engage, the more likely they can be engaged.

Twitter and TikTok recognize this problem, and it's why they are so popular. They provide a cap on the content length so that a person won't have to wade through millions of words or hours of video to understand the gist of something going on. The time commitment and barrier to entry is next to nil, which allows for a wide swathe of engagement. Like a cup of instant noodles, it is neither tasty nor healthy, but you can go through it in about a minute and seemingly be fed.

I think you also need to factor in the fact that at the time of this writing there has not been ONE of her alleged colleagues that has come to her defence, save for Shoe and I think she ended up deleting her tweet. She has no job or contract that I'm aware of to remove her from so this is the next best thing. If there's continued silence then I would say that she was cancelled.

Princess Weekes is Lindsay's co-writer and presenter on the show, and it would be the anti-racist thing of Lindsay to do to step aside for the Queer Woman of Color before she gets pushed out. Time to take her ball and go home from both the show and Twitter. My guess is she moves into some sort of consultant role at Patreon mentoring content creators rather than continue as a full time YouTuber, though because she does have a very dependent staff it'd likely take some time to transition. She has the connections to get a decent behind-the-scenes role at a major tech platform if she can manage her need for public validation.

Given the fact that Lindsay has happily admitted that hers was merely an abortion of convenience (and not just your garden variety "convenience" either - we're talking has a degree already, is credits away from finishing grad school anyways, and already has a hugely successful work-from-home career that requires like two hours of effort per week, maximum), then you'd think that, at least in this one particular, blatantly extreme case of abortion, it would be an open-and-shut issue. On a scale of 0 to 100 - 100 being "disabled thirdworld teen rape victim whose body will literally explode and rip a hole through the Immaterium if she can't get to Planned Parenthood in time", and 0 being "Lindsay Ellis" - then the ethical justifiability of Lindsay's decision was a 0.
