The mods there know they'll be subject to vast amounts of scrutiny as soon as the sub reopens, I wouldn't be surprised if they keep it closed over choosing to lose control over it. /r/lgbt is a relatively low traffic forum that generates huge volumes of drama so I doubt the admins will intervene.

Where did you see this? David was convicted of more than 20 counts of child sex offenses; that doesn't sound like a "one-off event" to me. This article talks about "the attacks," plural. Aimee himself made a statement about "a series of serious sexual offences."
