It's an interesting subject, actually. Conrad has mentioned that Shade (brother) never had any emotional issues, while Vic had some issues with depression that he was able to deal with eventually, specifically due to entering a relationship with Hope. I recommend the Decompression Chamber series if you haven't checked it out already if you're curious about the subject of his upbringing. It's still a mystery to me why kids in the same family turn out so different sometimes, maybe a psychologist farmer can dissect the situation one day. My guess is the missing father figure had something to do with it, but that's just armchair psychology conjecture on my part.
