I was never a big rap guy, but I enjoyed DMX's music because his stuff felt authentic. When I hear some gangly joker rapping about how he's gonna shoot some place up I hear a tryhard. I hear DMX rapping about threatening to kick someone's ass and I believe it. This was a guy who lived through some shit and he wasn't afraid to put that in his music, unlike most of the soundcloud rappers who are usually upper middle-class dipshits who've never had to struggle like he had. Plus DMX's beats are fucking awesome and way better than the minimalist traphouse crap that infests modern rap music. There's so much energy in his music with the horns and shit. Plus he's got one hell of a tough guy voice which really sells his image.
